What is the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) for Fairphone 2?
The Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) of the Fairphone 2 is:
SAR10g: 0.65 W/kg for the head
SAR10g: 1.1 W/kg for the body.
Because we had to comply with compliance with the new reporting methodologies, the SAR levels shown in the user guide under the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) section are no longer applicable.
How is it calculated?
SAR is calculated for two areas: the head and the rest of the body. During testing, the phone’s radio is set to its highest transmission level for each frequency.
For the head rating, the phone is placed directly next to the head to simulate actual calling behaviour. For the body rating, the phone is positioned 5 mm away from the body.
In summer 2017 the new RED legislation (Radio Equipment Directive) has come into force mostly replacing the (older) R&TTE Directive. In this new directive and the standards related to it there a new way of measuring SAR for mobile phones is to be used.
For the measurement at the head the lab applied a multiplying factor on the old measurement to comply with the new standard.
For the body measurement the separation distance used in the test is now 0.5 cm.
To avoid confusion, there has been no hardware change that leads to this increase but a change in the way of measuring.
How can I limit the SAR exposure?
The SAR of the Fairphone 2 is relatively low.
But you should therefore carry your phone in a bag or something similar to keep it 10mm away from your body. This ensures that exposure remains at or is below the as-tested level. To additionally minimize exposure we recommend to use a hands-free headset.
What is the SAR?
SAR stands for Specific Absorption Rate, which is a measure of how much radio frequency (RF) energy is absorbed by your body when using an electronic device like a mobile phone. In the EU, SAR limits are governed by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC).
Here, any mobile device with a SAR of 2.0 Watt per kilogram (W/kg) or less averaged over 10 grams of tissue is considered safe for consumer use.
