Fairphone 1: Factory Reset and Recovery mode

To find out if third-party software - such as downloaded apps or a faulty SIM card - causes your issues, you can return the phone to the factory settings.

In case your phone does not start anymore, you can use recovery mode. Scroll down for those instructions. 

Factory reset

When you return to the factory settings, all your personal data shall be erased. This includes files, pictures, chat conversations, downloaded apps etc.

Preparation

  1. Make a backup of all your music, pictures and so on
  2. Disconnect all cables you may have connected to your Fairphone 1
  3. Make sure your Fairphone 1 is charged at least 80%
  4. For FP1U users(released mid-2014), go directly to the instructions to Return to factory settings  
  5. For FP1 users:  
    1. Go to System Settings → Backup & Reset → Factory Data Reset → scroll down
    2. Select Erase Phone Storage"
    3. Press the Reset phone button.
    4. Your Fairphone 1 restarts itself and erases all content. If you completed this and you still see your personal data, proceed with the instructions to Return to factory settings.

Return to factory settings

To put your Fairphone 1 back to the factory settings:

  1. Turn your phone OFF
  2. Press and hold the Power button first and then Volume Up button combined until you see the green Android robot on the screen. If you see white text instead - select Recovery Mode from the list - this will bring you to the green robot)
  3. Press the Power button for a short time and the Android System Recovery screen with orange text appears
  4. Use the Volume Down button to scroll down in this menu and select Wipe data/factory reset
  5. Confirm with the Volume Up button
  6. With the Volume Down button, scroll down and select Yes - delete all user data
  7. Confirm with the Volume Up button
  8. You will return in the Android system recovery menu
  9. With the Volume Down button scroll down and select Wipe cache partition
  10. Confirm with the Volume Up button
  11. You will return in the Android system recovery menu
  12. Select Reboot system now
  13. Confirm with the Volume Up button
  14. Now your Fairphone boots up in the normal mode
  15. When you completed the hard reset, you have to set up the phone again as when you unboxed it upon delivery.

 

Recovery mode 

Booting your phone in Recovery Mode is for experienced users. You can use it also as a last resort when your Fairphone 1 does not start or reboot anymore or stays in a 'frozen state' (blue screen). 

Preparation

Before you boot in Recovery Mode:

  1. Make a backup of your Fairphone 1 - when possible -
  2. Disconnect all cables you may have connected to your Fairphone 1
  3. Make sure your Fairphone 1 is charged at least 80%.

Reboot in Recovery Mode

Follow the instructions below to boot in Recovery Mode:

  1. Turn off your phone: press and hold the top-right Power button
  2. Turn on your phone in Recovery Mode:
    1. Press the Volume Up button at the same time as the Power button for about 10 seconds until the screen changes
  3. You will see a resting green Android robot
  4. You are now in Recovery Mode!
  5. If the No Command message is displayed, briefly press the Power button
  6. Select the option Reboot system now
    1. Navigate with the Volume-down button
    2. Confirm the selection with the Volume-up button
  7. Your Fairphone 1 should reboot normally again.

Recovery Mode tips

  • To turn the menu off and on, use the Power button
  • Use the Volume Down button to navigate the menu. Press once to go to the next item on the list. This will highlight the item
  • Use Volume Up to select the highlighted item on the menu
  • If you need to return to a previous screen, use the Volume Down button to highlight "../" then press Volume Up to select it. You then return to the previous screen and directory.
