FP2. Ingress Protection (IP) rating - water and dust
We designed the Fairphone 2 to be a robust device. However, it does not have an IP rating. This means that it is not waterproof or dust-proof.
At the time when this phone was designed, one needed a sealed architecture in order to make a completely waterproof smartphone. Using seals or glue challenge our ambitions for openness and repairability.
Since we wanted our Fairphone to be easy for anyone to open and repair, we created a unique modular architecture.
Dust and moisture entering the device are the most common causes of failures in a phone. Of course, we wanted to prevent that from happening. With careful construction and seals and gaskets in the necessary places, we brought this back to a minimum.
This enables Fairphone 2 and Fairphone 3 to withstand normal usage conditions. Even so, you should take care of your phone!
Leaving it out in the rain or dropping it into water will thoroughly damage the phone due to corrosion and void the manufacturing warranty.
Next to that, we recommend using a waterproof pouch or sturdy case when you go to the beach, do water- or extreme sports or want to use it while farming or on a construction site. If you wear the phone on your body while sporting, consider a simple ziplock bag to protect your device from moisture and salts.
