FP2. Troubleshoot issues with Apps

Sometimes one or more apps, or their related functions, will not work as intended. A corrupt app can cause issues, such as random rebooting, or freezing of the processor that can only be solved by taking out the battery.

1. Update your phone

The first step is to update your Fairphone to the latest software.

2. Update your apps

  1. Open your Play Store  tap on your avatar of the Google account in the top right corner) → My apps & games.
  2. Select the tab Manage → Updates available (you will see the text No updates available if your Fairphone and all the apps are already up to date). Select all the apps you want to update. Tap on the Update icon (a circle arrow) on top.
  3. Restart your phone and check if the app now works.

3. Renew your SIM card

Make sure your SIM card is new and undamaged. An old (+1 year) or damaged SIM card makes your phones' processor work harder to keep up and can even cause serious issues. So if your SIM card is older than two years - or you can not recall how old it is - contact your provider to renew your SIM card. This way you can prevent apps from malfunctioning, or causing reboots when using an app.

4. Clear cache

Each app has a cache that hosts temporary data files for quick access. Sometimes those data become corrupted causing issues in your phone. To solve this, you can clear the cache of these apps. This will not erase your user data (e.g. settings, pictures).

For the specific app:

  1. Go to SettingsApps & notifications
  2. Tap on SEE ALL APPS
  3. Find the app with issues and tap on it
  4. Tap on Storage & cache
  5. Tap on CLEAR CACHE.

If this didn't solve your issue you should continue to the next step.

4. Clear storage

Each app stores also the settings and preferences on your phone. If an app that use to work suddenly stops it might be useful to reset it to its default settings

- IMPORTANT -
Before proceeding, make a backup.
Resetting the app, you might lose your personal data contained within the app. Depending on the app might just lose your settings (like login and/or a password), but with some other app, you might lose files or photos (like with WhatsApp).

For the specific app:

    1. Go to SettingsApps & notifications
    2. Tap on SEE ALL APPS
    3. Find the app with issues and tap on it
    4. Tap on Storage & cache
    5. Tap on CLEAR STORAGE

5. Compatibility

Fairphone 2 runs on Android 10.

If the issue persists, you will have to proceed with more rigorous steps: uninstall and reinstall your apps, test in safe mode, test your SIM card(s), and, as a last resort, return the phone to its factory settings.
