FP4. Identify and solve SIM card issues

To insert or remove the physical SIM card from your Fairphone 4 (FP4), please check the article FP4. Set up SIM card and eSIM.

Identify physical SIM card issues

An old, malfunctioning or damaged SIM card can cause issues with the phone. If you encounter any of the issues listed below, your SIM card(s) might be faulty.

  • Calls being interrupted, or messages delayed
  • Pin code requested without rebooting the phone
  • Sound quality decreasing
  • Battery life reduced
  • SIM card not recognized
  • Phone getting warm
  • Sudden airplane mode.

If you have any of those issues, we recommend to take out your current SIM card, then to insert a different SIM card (newer than 2 years) in your Fairphone 4 and test your phone again (we suggest you just try borrowing a SIM card for a while).

(To test your SIM card in another device is not a valid test).

If the issue disappears, please, contact your network provider to solve the issue with a new SIM card.

Our repair center will always test your phone with a SIM card newer than 2 years. Treating yourself to a new SIM card might be enough to solve the issue.

By testing it yourself, you will skip waiting times and generate less CO2. Of course, if you are unable to do so please contact our Customer Support.

If the issue still persists:

  1. Remove the SIM card from your phone, restart it and test it again without SIM card.
    1. If the phone works fine before you place the SIM card back, please contact your provider to ask for a SIM card replacement.
  2. Try with another SIM card (new than 2 years). You might borrow one to perform a test
  3. If you have an issue with calls or messages, start your phone in safe Safe mode and test it again
  4. If nothing helps, back up your data and try performing a factory reset. This might solve your issue (and it's also a required step to eventually send your device to the repair center).

If a Factory reset didn't solve the issue and you only use new SIM cards, please contact our Customer Support reporting the outcomes of your previous tests.

- IMPORTANT -
Your phone does not ring when receiving a call? Check the section issues with the phone calls notification(FP3 article, applies to FP4 too).

When a new SIM card is not recognized

Test at least one different SIM card, newer than 2 years, preferably from a different network provider.

If your SIM card does not work, but another SIM card does, your SIM card might be faulty. Please, contact your network provider to solve the issue.

If the issue is still there with a different SIM card, perform the following steps:

  1. Open the Phone app (the app you use to make a phone call).
  2. Digit the code *#*#2886#*#* in the same way you dial a phone number.
  3. The Service menu will open
  4. Tap on MANUSIM
  5. Check the output of the service test.
    1. If the SIM card is detected, you will read sim card is OK.
    2. If the SIM card is not detected, you will read SIM Card is missing. If this happens, test a different SIM card newer than 2 years (you might try borrowing a SIM card to perform the test).
  6. Contact us reporting the outcomes of your previous test.

SIM card is stuck

If your SIM card is stuck in the SIM port, please follow the steps in the section Take your SIM card out in the article FP4. Set up SIM card and eSIM.

If that doesn't solve the issue, please contact us.

DO NOT use metal tools to try to take the SIM card out.

Most likely your phone needs to go to the repair center.
