FP2. Introduction to Android 10

Your Fairphone 2 runs on a Fairphone OS (Operating System), based on Android OS. The operating system allows you to operate a device like a computer or a smartphone.

Since March 2022, we offer a Fairphone OS version for the Fairphone 2 based on Android 10.

Via this Android 10 upgrade, we can continue to support the software of the Fairphone 2 for the foreseeable future.

With Android 10 we can continue to release updates and security fixes to support the longevity of your device.

We recommend upgrading your Fairphone 2 to Android 10 so you will have:

  • A broader range of compatible apps.

  • New features.

  • Improved security.

A short history

The Fairphone 2 launched with Android 5 in 2016. Later on, we delivered Android 6. This was the last Android version officially supported by the chipset manufacturer.

In 2018, we released an upgrade to Android 7. Upgrading without chipset vendor support is challenging, and not a common practice in the industry. For example, it is difficult to match the requirements for Google certification.

We offered an upgrade to Android 9 in 2021. The Fairphone 2 is probably the only Android smartphone released in 2015 to still receive software and security updates. Read more in our Android 10 Frequently Asked Questions article.

What is new?

Each new Android version also has new features. Android 10 adds features like live caption, smart replies, and a system-wide dark theme, to name a few.

All the new features of Android 10 are listed on the Android 10 website

How to upgrade

We will release this update in a so-called staged roll-out. The update will be available in batches: we will not send it to all users at once. Only after it is sent out to all users that have the latest Fairphone Updater app version, the update will be available for manual updating.

To install Android 10:

  • Make a backup of your personal data.

  • Charge your battery to at least 80%.

  • Use a stable Wi-Fi connection.

  • Update the Fairphone Updater app to version 1.50.5 (tap and hold the app icon to see app information).
  • Make sure your SIM card is not older than a year.

  • If you are still running Android 5, 6 or 7, we recommend to upgrade in steps first, see our FAQ for the instructions. To find out which version you are running: find your build number (Settings > System > About phone > Build number) and check it in the release notes list.

Start the upgrade:

If you received a notification on your phone:

  1. Pull down the notifications bar with two fingers from the top.

  2. Tap on the notification to open the Fairphone Updater app.

  3. In the app, tap on the button Update.

You can also go straight to the Fairphone Updater app (update available to all from May 2022):

  1. Pull up the Apps drawer from the bottom of the screen.

  2. Open the Fairphone Updater app.

  3. In the app, tap on the button Update.

In case you need or want to do it manually:

  1. Get a data-transfer cable ready.

  2. Go to the support page and follow the instructions.

Restart your phone.

Enjoy Android 10!
