Troubleshoot the Mobile data Connection

If you are having issues connecting to Mobile data on your Fairphone, make sure to read the article Connect to Mobile data. There, you'll find instructions on how to enable Mobile data on your Fairphone.

If you are still having issues after going through the article, proceed with the next steps.

Update

Make sure that your phone is up to date.

If you are not running the latest software, or you are not sure, update your Fairphone to the latest Fairphone OS.

Check your mobile network

Make sure that your Fairphone connects to the right network provider:

  1. Go to Settings → Network and Internet.
  2. Select your Mobile Network. If needed, select the SIM card you are troubleshooting.
  3. Make sure Mobile data is enabled. You might need to enable Roaming (check with your provider as this may incur additional costs).
  4. Tap on Advanced (only on Android 10 and 11).
  5. Scroll down and disable the option Automatically select network. The phone will scan for all available operators, and this might take a bit.
  6. Manually select your network operator. If your data connection starts working, this means you might have been registered on the wrong network before.
If you are roaming, you can check with your operator which foreign networks will work best for you.

Mobile internet settings (APN)

Reset APN (Access Point Name)

Reset your APN(s) to their default. You'll need to do that separately for each SIM card you're using, including eSIMs.

  1. Go to Settings  Network & Internet.
  2. Select your Mobile Network. If needed, select the SIM card you are troubleshooting.
  3. Tap on Advanced (only on Android 10 and 11).
  4. Scroll down all the way and tap on Access Point Names.
  5. Tap on the three dots in the top right corner and tap on Reset to default.
  6. Test again.
If this didn't help, you can also check with your operator whether you need to manually set your APN settings.

Some operators limit the access to APN settings. If the Access Point Names menu isn't accessible to you, there's another way to reset your setting.

-IMPORTANT-
This will also reset all saved Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth (including paired devices) and Hotspot settings.
  1. Go to SettingsSystemReset options.
  2. Tap on Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth.
  3. You will be asked if you also want to delete your downloaded eSIM cards, no matter if you have any. Then, you'll need to confirm once more.
  4. Test again.

Manually set APN(s)

For a minority of network providers (usually some newer MVNO), you will have to set your APNs manually. Contact your provider and ask them to help you set up the APNs.

  1. Go to Settings Network & Internet.
  2. Select your Mobile Network. If needed, select the SIM card you are troubleshooting.
  3. Tap on Advanced (only on Android 10 and 11).
  4. Scroll down all the way and tap on Access Point Names.
  5. Tap on the plus symbol "+" icon located in the top right corner.
  6. Tap on each field you want to edit.
  7. Select or type in the value you obtained from your network operator, then tap on OK.
Repeat this point for every parameter you have.
  8. Once done, tap on the More options icon (three vertical dots 3dots_icon.png) in the top right corner, then tap on Save.
  9. Reboot your device. If your contract includes Mobile data, you should be able to connect to the internet now.

We also recommend consulting the forum of your provider to see if similar problems are mentioned.

Set your data to a specific network type

If you are still not connected, try different connection protocols (5G/4G/3G/2G).

For maximum performance, always enable the highest possible option - 5G for Fairphone 4 and 4G for Fairphone 3(+) and Fairphone 2.

  1. Go to Settings → Network & Internet.
  2. Select your Mobile Network.
  3. Tap on Advanced (only on Android 10 and 11).
  4. Tap on Preferred network type.
  5. Select the connection protocol you'd like to use.

Check your SIM card

In case you have a physical SIM card, we have a guide on how to Troubleshoot the SIM card(s).

If the issues persist, or in case you use an eSIM, the phone might be trying to connect using a network protocol that is not supported by your contract. Contact your provider for more information.
