How to set up an eSIM on your Fairphone
An eSIM is a digital SIM card that allows your Fairphone to connect to your mobile network operator without using a physical SIM card. With an active eSIM, you can make phone calls, send and receive SMS messages, and use mobile data.
ⓘ These steps require Android 13 or later. If you are not sure which version your Fairphone is running, see How to check and update your software version.
Applies to
- Fairphone 4 and later models
What you need before you begin
Before requesting an eSIM, contact your mobile network operator to confirm that they support eSIM functionality on Fairphone devices.
To issue your eSIM profile, your operator may ask for your phone's EID (Embedded Identity Document) number. You can find your EID number in two places:
- Printed on the barcode label on the box your Fairphone came in.
- On your phone by going to Settings > About phone and looking for EID.
How to download and set up an eSIM
When you turn on your Fairphone for the first time, follow the on-screen setup instructions to guide you through activating your eSIM.
If your Fairphone is already set up, request an eSIM QR code from your network operator and follow these steps:
- Go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
- If you already have a physical SIM card installed, tap Add SIM.
- Tap Set up an eSIM and follow the on-screen instructions to scan your QR code.
Connect your Fairphone to a stable WiFi network before scanning your QR code to ensure your eSIM profile downloads without interruption.
How to use dual SIMs
All of our phones support Dual SIM, Dual Standby (DSDS). With DSDS, you can use two SIMs at the same time. This allows you to:
- Have two phone numbers and two different plans on one device.
- Use one number for business and another number for personal calls.
- Get a local SIM plan while traveling abroad.
When you add a second SIM, you'll be asked to choose which SIMs to use by default for calls, texts and data:
- Calls: Pick a default SIM or tap Ask every time.
- Texts: Pick a default.
- Mobile data: Pick a default.
You can change these preferences at any time by going to Settings → SIMs → Your primary SIMs.
If your eSIM is not connecting or working as expected, read our guide to Troubleshoot the SIM Card(s).
