Starting with Fairphone 4, we introduced certified Ingress Protection (IP) ratings to our phones to help your phone last longer while respecting your right to repair. Here is what your phone's rating means for everyday use and how liquid exposure affects your warranty.

Fairphone IP ratings

• The Fairphone (Gen. 6): IP55 rating
• Fairphone 5: IP55 rating
• Fairphone 4: IP54 rating
• Fairphone 3(+) and Fairphone 2: No IP rating

What your IP rating means

An IP rating certified by the IEC measures how well a phone prevents dust and water from entering the phone body.

IP55 rating: The Fairphone (Gen. 6) and Fairphone 5

Phones with an IP55 rating are weather-proof and protected against dust and direct water spray:

• First digit (5 - Solid particle protection): Dust will not interfere with the satisfactory operation of your phone.
• Second digit (5 - Liquid ingress protection): Water projected in jets against the phone body will have no harmful effect.

You can safely use your phone during dry sports and everyday outdoor activities. However, protect your phone and avoid using it while doing water sports, during heavy rain, or in a powerful storm.

IP54 rating: Fairphone 4

Fairphone 4 has an IP54 rating, which we achieved by applying a protective nano-coating to both the interior and exterior of the phone:

• First digit (5 - Solid particle protection): Dust will not interfere with the satisfactory operation of your phone.
• Second digit (4 - Liquid ingress protection): Water splashing against the outer shell from any direction will have no harmful effect.

You can use your phone in light rain or during dry sports. Protect your phone from powerful storms and direct exposure to water sports.

How liquid damage affects your warranty

Our phones contain several liquid contact indicators (LCI) inside the frame. Before performing any warranty repair, our team checks these indicators alongside signs of clear oxidation to verify if liquid reached the inside of your phone.
