Maximize your battery life

Some apps and settings drain your battery more than others, so we put together some tips to help you maximize your Fairphone's battery life.

Your Fairphone comes with a removable lithium-ion battery. The capacity of your Fairphone's battery should be more than enough to last you through the day:

  • The Fairphone 5 battery holds a typical capacity of 4200 mAh.
  • The Fairphone 4 battery holds a typical capacity of 3905 mAh.
  • The Fairphone 3(+) battery holds a typical capacity of 3060 mAh.
  • The Fairphone 2 battery holds a typical capacity of 2420 mAh.

Battery saving tips

Update your Fairphone

If you are not running the latest software, or you are not sure, see our support article: Check and update your software version.

Check your battery usage

To see how apps use your battery, follow these steps:

  1. Go to SettingsBattery (& Charging).
  2. Tap Battery usage.

The graph shows the battery level since the last full charge. Below the graph, you'll find a list of apps and system services.

Tap the name of an app to change how it uses the battery. Keep in mind, some apps may not work as expected if you set the app's battery use to Restricted. For the best results, choose Optimized.

Turn on Battery Saver

To quickly reduce battery usage, turn on Battery Saver:

  1. Go to Settings → Battery (& Charging) → Battery Saver.
  2. Tap Use Battery Saver to turn on or off.

Battery Saver turns on dark theme, limits or turns off background activity, and may lead to fewer/slower app notifications.

If Battery Saver is turned on, the battery icon in the status bar will show a red or orange outline.

Check your SIM card

Make sure your SIM card is newer than 2 years and undamaged. SIM cards age like any other electronic circuit and may cause unexpected issues.

Optimize your settings

Your display and data connections use up a lot of power while in use. By adjusting some settings, you can significantly extend your battery life.

Display settings

Adjust your brightness

Lower your brightness level, and turn on Adaptive brightness. Adaptive brightness automatically adjusts your screen brightness to your environment and activities, which can help reduce battery usage.

Adjust your screen timeout

A shorter screen timeout will use less battery, and increase security if you use a screen lock with protection.

To adjust your screen timeout:

  1. Go to SettingsDisplay → Screen timeout.

Adjust your wallpaper

If you use a live wallpaper, choose a static image instead. Learn how to Change your wallpaper.

Connection settings

Wi-Fi, mobile data and Bluetooth

Wi-Fi is more efficient than mobile data. Connect to a stable Wi-Fi network whenever possible to help increase battery life.

If your Wi-Fi or mobile network connection is weak, your Fairphone will use more energy to stay connected.

If you’re not using Bluetooth, turn it off to reduce battery usage.

Check your location settings

Important: If location is turned off, apps that use location may not work properly. Read more about location settings: Manage your Android device’s location settings.

When your location is turned on, apps can access location-based services. This improves your location accuracy, but can also increase battery usage.

To manage your location settings:

  1. Go to Settings → Location.
    • Tap Use location to turn on or off.
    • Tap Location Services for more options.

Turn on Airplane mode

When you turn on Airplane mode, Wi-Fi, mobile data and Bluetooth are turned off. This can help save battery without completely turning off your phone.

To turn on Airplane mode, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings → Network and internet.
  2. Tap Airplane mode to turn on or off.

Take care of your battery

Charge regularly

To increase its lifespan, we recommend keeping your Fairphone's battery percentage between 20% and 80%. There's no need to always have it topped up to 100%, but also, don't wait until it drops to just 1%.

To show the battery percentage in the status bar, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings → Battery (& Charging).
  2. Tap Battery percentage.

Avoid extreme temperatures

Batteries need an optimum temperature to keep the chemical processes inside going. So avoid extreme heat and cold. Don't place your phone in direct sunlight, close to a radiator, or in a fridge. If the temperatures are below zero degrees, keep it inside a pocket as much as possible.

Long term storage

If your battery/device is fully discharged for a long time, it may require up to 20 minutes of charging before the device can power on. If you still can't power on the device after a couple of hours, the battery might not work anymore.

If you store your battery/device for an extended period, keep it at room temperature, and make sure to charge your battery between 50% and 80% every couple of months.

A fully discharged battery could fall into an over-discharged state. This will severely diminish its capacity to hold a charge.
