Introduction
Your Fairphone comes with a removable lithium-ion battery. In the right conditions, the capacity of your Fairphone's battery should be more than enough to last you through the day:
Phone | Battery capacity |
---|---|
Fairphone 5 | 4200mAh |
Fairphone 4 | 3905mAh |
Fairphone 3(+) | 3060mAh |
Fairphone 2 | 2420mAh |
To check your battery's current charge level:
- On your Fairphone, go to Settings → Battery & Charging.
Optional: To show the battery's current charge level in the status bar, tap Battery percentage.
Quickly extend your battery life
In just a couple of small steps, you can quickly extend your Fairphone's battery life.
Turn on Battery Saver
To quickly reduce battery usage, turn on Battery Saver:
- On your Fairphone, go to Settings → Battery (& Charging) → Battery Saver.
- Tap Use Battery Saver to turn on or off.
Battery Saver turns on dark theme, limits or turns off background activity, and may lead to fewer/slower app notifications.
Turn on Airplane mode
When you turn on Airplane mode, Wi-Fi, mobile data and Bluetooth are turned off. This can help save battery without completely turning off your phone.
To turn on Airplane mode, follow these steps:
- On your Fairphone, go to Settings → Network and internet.
- Tap Airplane mode to turn on or off.
Optimize your software and settings
Regular maintenance is the key to increasing your Fairphone's battery life. By adjusting some settings, you can significantly extend your battery life.
Regular maintenance
Update to the latest software version
We recommend keeping your Fairphone updated with the latest software version at all times.
If you are not running the latest software, or you are not sure, see our support article: Check and update your software version.
Check recent battery usage
To see how apps use your battery, follow these steps:
- Go to Settings → Battery (& Charging).
- Tap Battery usage.
The graph shows the battery level since the last full charge. Below the graph, you'll find a list of apps and system services.
Tap the name of an app to change how it uses the battery. Keep in mind, some apps may not work as expected if you set the app's battery use to Restricted. For the best results, choose Optimized.
Check your SIM card
Make sure your SIM card is newer than 2 years and undamaged. SIM cards age like any other electronic circuit and may cause unexpected issues.
Display settings
Turn on dark theme
If you have a Fairphone 5, turning on dark theme will help the OLED display use less battery:
- On your Fairphone, go to Settings → Display.
- Tap Dark theme to turn on or off.
Adjust your brightness
Your display can use up a lot of power while in use. Lower your brightness level to use less battery:
- From the top of your screen, swipe down twice.
- To lower brightness, drag the brightness slider to the left.
Adaptive brightness can also help use less battery by automatically adjusting your screen brightness to your environment and activities:
- On your Fairphone, go to Settings → Display.
- Tap Adaptive brightness to turn on.
Tip: You can still move the slider manually to help adaptive brightness learn your preferences.
Adjust your screen timeout
A shorter screen timeout will use less battery, and increase security if you use a screen lock with protection.
To adjust your screen timeout:
- Go to Settings → Display → Screen timeout.
For the best results, set the screen timeout to 30 seconds or less.
Adjust your wallpaper
If you use a live wallpaper, choose a static image instead. Learn how to Change your wallpaper.
Connection settings
Wi-Fi, mobile data and Bluetooth
Wi-Fi is more energy efficient than mobile data. Connect to a stable Wi-Fi network whenever possible to help increase battery life.
If your Wi-Fi or mobile network connection is weak, your Fairphone will use more energy to stay connected.
If you’re not using Bluetooth, turn it off to reduce battery usage.
Check your location settings
When your location is turned on, apps can access location-based services. This improves your location accuracy, but can also increase battery usage.
To manage your location settings:
- Go to Settings → Location.
- Tap Use location to turn on or off.
- Tap Location Services for more options.
Long-term care and safety
Every lithium-ion battery has a limited lifespan, and over time, you may notice your Fairphone's battery is not holding as much power as it once did. Luckily, there are some steps you can take to increase the lifespan of the battery.
Long-term care
Charge your Fairphone regularly
We recommend keeping your battery's charge level between 20% and 80%. Consistently keeping the battery charged to 100% or allowing it to drain to 1% can negatively impact the battery's long-term health.
Avoid extreme temperatures
Your Fairphone's lithium-ion battery works best within a specific temperature range. Extreme heat or cold can disrupt the chemical processes, impacting performance and lifespan. Try to avoid:
- Direct sunlight
- Placing your phone near radiators or other heat sources
- Putting your phone in the refrigerator or freezer
Tip: If temperatures dip below freezing, keep your phone in your pocket as much as possible.
Long-term storage
Allowing your battery to fully discharge can lead to an over-discharged state, significantly reducing the battery's ability to hold a charge.
- For extended storage, keep your battery at room temperature and maintain a charge level of at least 50%.
- If your battery has been fully discharged for a long time, it may require up to 20 minutes of charging before the device powers on.
- If the device won't power on after two hours of charging, the battery may no longer work.
Safety
When to replace your battery
If your Fairphone's battery is more than two years old, suddenly not charging well, or has expanded in size, it may be reaching the end of its life. You can order a new battery through our webshop.
Identifying a swollen or expanded battery
If you suspect your Fairphone's battery is swollen or has expanded, try the spin test:
- Remove the battery from your Fairphone.
- Place it on a smooth, flat surface.
- Spin it.
If your battery spins more than two full rotations, it may be swelling. Do not attempt to charge a swollen battery. Instead:
- Power off your Fairphone and remove the battery.
- Discard the swollen battery responsibly.
- Replace the battery:
- If your Fairphone is still within its standard two-year warranty, our customer support team will happily help replace your battery.
- Otherwise, you can purchase a new battery through our webshop.
- Still not sure if your battery is swollen? Our customer support team can help diagnose the problem.
- While not common, all lithium-ion batteries are at risk of swelling. Over-charging, humid environments and frequent dropping can increase the chance of the battery swelling.
- Never ship a swelling battery. Contact your municipality for more information about nearby chemical recycling points.
