Fairphone Moments
The Fairphone (Gen. 6) comes with a physical switch on the side which, by default, will trigger Fairphone Moments. Fairphone Moments is a brand new minimalist experience to use your Fairphone with fewer distractions. This gives you the freedom to disconnect when you want and stay fully present in real life or customize moments fitted to your own experiences, such as focus and travel modes.
How to Use Fairphone Moments
First Launch
When you flip the Switch on The Fairphone (Gen. 6), Fairphone Moments will launch for the first time. Fairphone Moments will display an alternative home app with fewer distractions and interactions. If you flip the Switch while on your home screen, you will see the new Fairphone Moments app overlay your regular home app. If you flip the Switch while running another app in foreground, the Switch will happen in background and a small animation will indicate that the Switch happened.
On first launch the Fairphone Moments app will show you five default apps that are available on your phone: Camera, Browser, Maps, Messages & Phone. Clicking any of these will open that app, then quitting the app will make you return to Fairphone Moments again.
When Fairphone Moments is enabled all your notifications will get blocked. This means that your calls, text messages, or any messages from third party apps will not go through unless they originate from any of your starred contacts. By default repeat callers are allowed, meaning that if someone outside of your starred contacts calls you repeatedly within 15 minutes their call will go through.
How do I exit Fairphone Moments?
Flipping the Switch back to the up state will exit Fairphone Moments. If done when Fairphone Moments is running in foreground you will see an exit animation and your regular Android home screen again. If you are flipping the Switch with an app running in foreground you will see a small overlay animation and the change will happen in background.
Once you have exited Fairphone Moments, any of the notifications that you have missed while running Fairphone Moments will show again on your lock screen and notification drawer in the control center.
Customising
Fairphone Moments is built to limit distractions so you can focus on what really matters to you. Since those distractions and what matters to you is different per person and per situation we offer rich customization options.
How do I create a new Moment?
When you have Fairphone Moments enabled you will see a main action button right underneath the date-time element with the name of your currently enabled Moment. Clicking this will lead you to the moment switcher from which you can activate or create a new moment.
Creating a custom moment allows you to build it from scratch. Next to creating a fully custom moment you can choose from any of the presets below to give you a head start:
- Deep Focus: allows you to focus on the tasks you need to complete and will pre-select some of your productivity apps :
- Journey: to focus on the road ahead, pre-selecting navigation and music apps
- Recharge: take a moment to recharge with your favorite podcast & meditation apps
- Quality Time: take some time off with friends and family, snap good memories with photo & camera apps pre-selected
Each of these presets will have some apps preselected to be featured on your home screen. You can adjust this by adding more or removing them, allowing a maximum of five apps to be featured on your home screen.
As well as the apps featured you will also be able to choose a wallpaper, name and icon for your mode. Any of these settings can be adjusted by clicking the settings button to the right of the Moment you wish to modify, in the main moment switcher.
In total you can have up to six different moments set up.
How do I customise a Moment?
Every Moment can be tweaked to your liking to make it fit the moment. You can give them a distinct name and icon that fits the mood by going to customisation settings.
Additionally you can get into more detailed settings to set up who is allowed to contact you while Fairphone Moments is active and what apps can send notifications.
To reach this you must press on the button below the clock and date, afterwards pressing on the setting button to the right of the Moment you wish to customise.
How do I select the Visible Apps?
The visible apps setting adjusts the apps that are visible on your launcher. These are the apps that you will continue to have easy access to while using this moment. You can also select apps from your work profile. These will have a work profile icon next to them and can be accessed just like the others. You can list a maximum of five apps per moment so choose wisely.
Adding an app to the list of visible apps does have an impact on you receiving notifications from it. By default these apps will not send you any notifications unless they originate from any of the contacts or apps that you have allowed to disturb you. Keep in mind that any app running prior to you enabling Fairphone Moments will continue running in the background.
How do I choose allowed contacts and Notifications?
This setting will allow you to indicate who can reach out to you while you have this Moment enabled. It is similar in working to the people setting of Android’s Do Not Disturb. By default Allowed contacts will be set to only starred contacts. This means that any contacts you starred in the default Android contacts app will have their notifications from calls, messages or third party apps go through.
Keep in mind that the logic extends to third party (messaging) apps only if those apps integrate with the Android Contacts Library and permissions have been given by the user to access these.
Contact inclusion rules take priority over any rules set up in App Notifications. This means that if one of your contacts, that is allowed to contact you while this moment is active, contacts you via an app that is not specifically included in the app notifications rules the message will still go through.
FAQ
Q: Whenever I enable Fairphone Moments, will my apps keep running?
Yes, any apps running will continue running whenever you enable Fairphone Moments. Fairphone Moments changes the home app you are using but is not touching any of your apps. This means that if any app is playing media in the background when you flip the media will continue playing.
Q: Will the apps selected as my visible apps on the homescreen send me notifications?
No, only apps selected in the settings of your moments will allow you to send notifications, or if one of your included contacts sends your a notification via this app.
Q: If Signal is not added as an app that can send me notifications but one of my included contacts sends me a Signal message. Will it go through?
Yes, contact inclusion rules have priority over app inclusion rules. This means that if you add a contact to your inclusion rules, any notification your receive from them will go through, regardless of if the app they send it from is in your app inclusion rules.
Q: Will I still receive phone calls?
No. You will not receive any phone calls unless you have added Phone as an app to your app inclusion rules. If you want to only receive phone calls from specific contacts you can add those contacts to the contacts inclusion rules, then the calls will go through for those contacts even if the phone app itself is not added. An exception to all this is the setup around repeat callers, see below.
Q: What about repeat callers?
By default all newly created moments will have the option for repeat callers enabled. This means that if you receive multiple calls from the same phone number within a 15 minute period, the calls will go through regardless of if those contacts are added to any inclusion rules. You can adjust this setting per moment.
Q: How can I change the name and icon associated with the moment?
