Manual Data Transfer Options for Your Fairphone
Sometimes, automated transfers don't get everything, or you might prefer to move specific types of data manually. Here’s how to transfer your contacts, photos, videos, music, and other files to your new Fairphone using manual methods.

Transfer contacts manually
Sync with your Google account (Recommended):
If you already use contacts in your Google account, your contacts will appear automatically once you sign in to your new Fairphone with the same Google account.
If your contacts do not appear automatically, follow these steps on your old device:
- Android: Go to Settings → Passwords, passkeys & accounts (or Passwords & accounts). Tap on your Google account, tap Account sync, and make sure Contacts is toggled on.
- iPhone: Go to Settings → Contacts → Accounts → Add Account → Google and make sure Contacts is toggled on.
Import from your SIM Card:
If you have contacts saved on your SIM card, you can import them:
- Insert the SIM card into your new Fairphone. For more details, see: How to set up a SIM card.
- On your Fairphone, open the Contacts app and go to Organize → Manage SIM.
- Choose the contacts you want to import, then tap Import.
Transfer photos, videos, and music manually
Google Photos (Recommended for photos/videos):
- On your old phone, download the Google Photos app and sign in with your Google account.
- Turn on Backup in the app settings and allow all your photos and videos to upload. For more details, see: Back up photos & videos (Google Photos Help).
- On your new Fairphone, sign in to the Google Photos app with the same Google account.
Connect to a computer:
- Connect your old phone to your computer using a USB cable.
- Locate the "DCIM" (for photos/videos) and "Music" folders on your old phone's internal storage or SD card.
- Copy these folders (or their contents) to a folder on your computer.
- Disconnect your old phone and connect your new Fairphone to the computer. For more details, see: How to connect to a computer (with a cable).
- Copy the folders from your computer to the "DCIM" and "Music" folders on your Fairphone's internal storage or SD card.
Transfer files and folders manually
Cloud storage (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.):
- On your old phone, upload important documents, PDFs, or other files to a cloud storage service.
- On your new Fairphone, install the app for that cloud storage service, sign in, and download the files you need.
Connect to a computer:
- Connect your old phone to your computer using a USB cable and copy any desired files to your computer.
- Disconnect your old phone and connect your new Fairphone to the computer. For more details, see: How to connect to a computer (with a cable).
- Copy the files and folders from your computer to the appropriate locations on your Fairphone's internal storage or SD card.
Transfer calendar events manually
Sync with your Google account (Recommended):
If you already sync calendar events with your Google account, they will appear automatically once you sign in to your new Fairphone with the same Google account.
If your calendar events do not appear automatically, follow these steps on your old device:
- Android: Go to Settings → Passwords, passkeys & accounts (or Passwords & accounts). Tap on your Google account, tap Account sync, and make sure Calendar is toggled on.
- iPhone: Go to Settings → Contacts → Accounts → Add Account → Google and make sure Calendar is toggled on.

Transfer WhatsApp chats manually
WhatsApp chats are not included in standard Google or iPhone backups. They have their own dedicated backup system.
For Android to Fairphone:
- On your old Android phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings → Chats → Chat backup.
- Tap Google Account, select the account you want to use for your backup, then tap Back up.
- On your new Fairphone, install WhatsApp, verify your phone number, and when prompted, choose to Restore your chats from Google Drive.
For iPhone to Fairphone:
- On your iPhone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings → Chats → Transfer chat history → Transfer to Android and follow the on-screen instructions. For more details, see: How to move chats from an iPhone to an Android device (WhatsApp Help Center).
