What to do if your Fairphone is lost or stolen

We are very sorry to hear that your Fairphone is missing. We know how much you rely on your device, and we want to help you secure your data and explore your options for recovery.

Follow these steps immediately to protect your information and report the incident.

1. Secure your device remotely

Even if you don’t have your phone, Google provides tools to lock or erase it from any web browser.

  • Remote Lock (New for Android 15): If you can’t remember your Google password, you can use android.com/lock to lock your screen using only your verified phone number and a quick security challenge.

  • Find My Device: Visit google.com/android/find. If your phone is online (or part of the Find My Device network), you can:

    • Play a sound: Helpful if you think it’s just misplaced nearby.

    • Secure Device: Locks the phone and signs you out of your Google account.

    • Factory Reset: If you are certain you won’t get it back, choose "Erase Device" to delete all data. Note: Once erased, you can no longer track it.

2. Report the theft to the authorities

Filing a police report is a critical step, especially for insurance claims.

  • Find your IMEI: You will need your 15-digit IMEI number for the report. You can find this on your original invoice or the original packaging. If you don’t have these, contact your reseller or our support team if you purchased your device directly on our website.

  • File the report: Contact your local police station to file a report. Make sure to get a case number or a copy of the report.

3. Contact your Mobile Carrier

Notify your service provider immediately to:

  • Block your SIM card: This prevents unauthorized calls, texts, and data usage.

  • Blacklist the IMEI: In many regions, carriers can block the device from connecting to any local network, making it useless to a thief.

4. Register with the Fairphone "Stolen List"

We maintain an internal database of stolen Fairphones. While we cannot track the phone for you, we check this list if someone attempts to register the device or request specific technical services (like bootloader unlocking).

How to register: Contact Fairphone Support with your IMEI, and we will add your device to our registry.

5. Check your Insurance

Many personal home or travel insurance policies cover the theft of mobile electronics. Contact your provider to see if you are eligible for a replacement or reimbursement. They will almost certainly require the police report mentioned in Step 2.
