How to troubleshoot Active Noise Cancellation on Fairbuds and Fairbuds XL

Fairbuds and Fairbuds XL feature Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) to help you focus on your music or calls by dampening background noise. If your ANC performance seems reduced or isn't working as expected, this guide helps you get the best audio experience from your device.

What to expect with ANC turned on

Fairbuds reduce background noise by an average of 22dB (up to 33dB), while Fairbuds XL offer an average reduction of 18dB (up to 31dB).

The effectiveness of ANC depends on your environment:

  • Low-range frequencies: Delivers a solid reduction in deep, repetitive noises like airplane or train engines.
  • Mid-range frequencies: Offers the strongest performance, effectively blocking office chatter or street noise.
  • High-range frequencies: Provides noticeable noise reduction, though sudden or high-pitched sounds are harder for any audio device to block completely.

ANC is designed to dampen surrounding noise and will not eliminate all sound entirely.

What to do if ANC is not working as expected

If you feel your ANC is not performing as it should, follow these troubleshooting steps:

Step 1: Confirm ANC is turned on

Your device features three distinct audio modes:

  • Noise canceling on
  • Noise canceling off
  • Ambient sound (keeps important sounds audible)

To switch between modes:

  • Fairbuds: Touch and hold the right earbud.
  • Fairbuds XL: Press the mode button located above the joystick.

You will hear a voice prompt confirming the current mode.

Step 2: Check the physical fit and seal

ANC relies on a tight physical seal to block background noise. If air leaks into your ear canal or around the ear pads, ambient sound will enter as well.

  • Fairbuds: Your earbuds include three different sizes of silicone ear tips (S, M, and L). Ensure your ear tips provide a snug, airtight fit. If the earbuds feel loose, try switching to a larger size.
  • Fairbuds XL: Check for items that break the acoustic seal, such as thick glasses frames, earrings, or hair trapped under the ear cushions. Over time, heavy daily use can flatten ear pads. If they no longer bounce back to seal firmly against your head, consider replacing the cushions.
For Fairbuds XL, synthetic leather cushions provide a tighter acoustic seal and naturally block out more background noise than breathable textile cushions.

Step 3: Clean the microphone openings

Your device uses built-in outer microphones to listen to external noise and generate anti-noise signals.

Check that the microphone openings are free of dust, lint, or debris, which can accumulate over time and reduce ANC effectiveness. Clean them gently using a dry, soft cloth or a soft brush.
