Shows "Unknown" Caller ID
Caller Unknown vs Private Number
Sometimes when you receive a call, the number appears as Private or Unknown. Here's what those terms mean:
- Private Number - your caller is hiding their number on purpose. There may be many reasons for this, including privacy concerns or malicious intent.
- Unknown Caller - there is an error in the network settings or a feature, which is not supported, is enabled.
If your number shows as Private to others:
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap on the three dot menu on top right → Settings → Calling accounts.
- Select the SIM card you wish to configure → Additional settings. Wait for the page to load.
- Tap on Caller ID and select the option you prefer.
If your caller Is "Unknown"
As a first step towards solving this situation, make sure to update to the latest software version.
In case the update did not help and it happens with different callers, there are a couple of things to try:
Disable VoLTE (Enhanced 4G LTE, 4G Calling)
The exact name of the feature varies across networks.
- Go to Settings → Network & internet → Mobile network → Advanced.
- In Android 13, go to Settings → Network & internet → SIMs. Select the SIM you want to configure and scroll down.
- Tap on VoLTE to disable it.
If you can't find the option in your Fairphone, change the Preferred network type to 2G/3G auto. This will disable VoLTE by default.
Disable Wi-Fi calling (VoWi-Fi, Voice over Wi-Fi)
Additionally, if the issue is still not solved, you might also need to disable Wi-Fi calling.
- Go to Settings → Network & internet → Mobile network → Advanced.
- In Android 13, go to Settings → Network & internet → SIMs. Select the SIM you want to configure and scroll down.
- Tap on Wi-Fi calling and disable it.
If you can't find the option in your Fairphone, disconnect from the Wi-Fi and see if this helps. If this solves the issue, contact our Customer Support.
