Shows "Unknown" Caller ID

Caller Unknown vs Private Number

We have recently become aware of an issue related to Unknown calls on some Network Operators. Following here you will find more instructions on how to resolve this.

If your Fairphone is instead showing Private Number when receiving a phone call, this is a different issue. In this case, just ask your caller to set the Caller ID as visible.

If your number shows as Private to others: Open the Phone app > Tap on the three dot menu on top right > Settings > Calling accounts > Tap on SIM card/name provider > Settings (name provider) > GSM call settings (name provider) > Additional settings > Caller ID - Number displayed in outgoing calls > Show number.

If your caller Is "Unknown"

As a first step towards solving this situation, make sure to update to the latest software version.

In case the update did not help and it happens with different callers, try to:

Disable Enhanced 4G LTE (VoLTE, 4G Calling)

1. Go to Settings > Network & internet > Mobile network > Advanced.
2. Click and disable the option "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode".

If the option "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode" is not available in your Fairphone, you can try selecting "Preferred network type" and then choosing "2G/3G auto". After the next software update, we suggest you switch back to the option "2G/3G/4G auto".

Disable Wi-Fi calling (VoWi-Fi, Voice over Wi-Fi)

Additionally, if the issue is still not solved, you might also need to disable Wi-Fi Calling (this service is not enabled for all network providers, so it might happen that it doesn't show on your device).

1. Open the Phone app (the app you use to make phone calls).
2. Tap on the More options icon (three vertical dots icon in the top right corner) then tap on Settings > Calling accounts.
3. Select the SIM card you are using.
4. Click on Wi-Fi Calling and disable it.

Notes about compatibility

VoLTE is the feature that lets your device use LTE data and make calls at the same time. Without it, every time you are in a call, your mobile data will either downgrade to 3G/2G or turn off completely. This depends on your operator and the network infrastructure in your region.

Fairphone 3(+) is technically capable of using VoLTE and VoWiFi technologies but we are still waiting to complete the partnerships with various phone carriers. If enabling VoLTE or VoWi-Fi is causing problems, we strongly advise you to keep the feature disabled.
