How to replace the display in The Fairphone (Gen. 6)
Replacing the display on your phone is quick and simple. Follow our video guide or the step-by-step instructions below to safely replace your display.
Before you begin, read the important information in How to replace spare parts on The Fairphone (Gen. 6).
What you need before you begin
- Applies to: The Fairphone (Gen. 6)
- Required tools: Torx T5 screwdriver, a plastic opening card or pick, and a small container to keep your screws safe
- Spare parts: Fairphone (Gen. 6) Display
Removing the back cover
- Power off the phone by long pressing the Power button. Depending on your settings, press the Power button and Volume Up button together to open the power menu.
- Place the phone on a flat surface with the screen facing down.
- Remove the two screws on the top left and top right of the lower back cover.
Outer screws are longer than inner screws. Keep your outer and inner screws separated so reassembly is easy.
- Slide the lower back cover off towards the bottom of the phone.
Removing the battery and upper back cover
- Keep the phone facing screen down on your flat surface.
- With your Torx T5 screwdriver, remove the five screws around the battery.
- Keep all five screws safely inside your container.
- Lift the connector cover on top, disconnect the board-to-board (BTB) connector, and lift out the battery.
- Unclip the plastic hooks locking the upper back cover in place.
Use a plastic card or pick to unclip the plastic hooks to avoid damaging your back cover or fingers. Start from the bottom left and right, then work your way upward on both sides.
- Set the battery and upper back cover safely to the side.
Removing the display
Around the frame, eight silver screws hold the display in place. These display screws sit directly on the frame and are silver in color, distinguishing them from the screws for the loudspeaker and antenna.
- With your Torx T5 screwdriver, remove the eight silver display screws around the frame.
- Keep all eight screws safely inside your container.
- Flip the phone over. The display will be loose, but do not pull it away completely because it is still connected by a cable.
- Move the display to the side to reveal the BTB connector attached to the printed circuit board (PCB).
- Remove the single screw holding the connector cover in place.
- Lift off the cover and disconnect the BTB connector to release the display.
Installing the new display
- Connect your new display to the PCB. You will feel it click into place when attached properly.
- Place the connector cover back over the connector and tighten the single cover screw.
- Flip the phone over and insert the eight silver display screws around the frame.
Avoid overtightening the display screws. Overtightening can cause the screen to bend and create bubbles under screen protectors.
Reassembling your Fairphone
- Snap the upper back cover into place. Always attach the upper back cover before inserting the battery to avoid bending the metal flaps on top.
- Place the battery back inside its compartment.
- Reconnect the battery BTB connector and close the connector cover over it.
- Re-screw the five short inner screws around the battery.
- Slide the lower back cover back onto the phone and re-screw the two long outer screws.
- Power on your Fairphone to test the display.
