Replacing the cameras or earpiece in your phone is straightforward and simple. Follow our video guide or the step-by-step instructions below to safely replace these spare parts.
Before you begin, read the important information in How to replace spare parts on The Fairphone (Gen. 6).
What you need before you begin
- Applies to: The Fairphone (Gen. 6)
- Required tools: Torx T5 screwdriver, a plastic card or pick, and a small container to keep your screws safe
- Spare parts: Main camera, Ultra-wide camera, Front camera, or Earpiece
Removing the back cover
- Power off the phone by long pressing the Power button. Depending on your settings, press the Power button and Volume Up button together to open the power menu.
- Place the phone on a flat surface with the screen facing down.
- Remove the two screws on the top left and top right of the lower back cover.
Outer screws are longer than inner screws. Keep your outer and inner screws separated so reassembly is easy.
- Slide the lower back cover off toward the bottom of the phone.
Removing the battery and upper back cover
- Keep the phone facing screen down on your flat surface.
- Use your Torx T5 screwdriver to remove the five screws around the battery.
- Keep all five screws safely inside your container.
- Slowly lift the connector cover on top with a plastic pick, disconnect the board-to-board (BTB) connector, and lift out the battery.
- Unclip the plastic hooks locking the upper back cover in place. Use a plastic card or pick to unclip the plastic hooks to avoid damaging your back cover or fingers. Start from the bottom left and right, then work your way upward on both sides.
- Set the battery and upper back cover safely to the side.
Removing the top unit
- Use your Torx T5 screwdriver to unscrew the six black screws holding the top unit in place.
- Keep all six screws safely inside your container.
- Lift out the top unit using a plastic card or pick.
Removing the cameras
Each camera connects to the motherboard with a board-to-board (BTB) connector:
- Main camera: Connector is on the left (1).
- Ultra-wide camera: Connector is above the main camera connector (2).
- Front camera: Connector is in the middle (3).
- Use a plastic card or pick to disconnect the BTB connector of the camera you want to replace.
- Lift out the camera module, using your plastic pick for support if needed.
Handle camera spare parts with care. Do not bend the cable excessively or touch the camera lenses.
Removing the earpiece
The top purple box indicates the earpiece, and the lower purple box indicates the earpiece BTB connector.
- Use a plastic card or pick to disconnect the BTB connector of the earpiece.
- Lift out the earpiece, using a plastic pick for support if needed.
Installing a new camera
- If your new camera has a red protective lining on the edge, peel off this lining before installing the camera.
- Insert the new camera into the open camera slot.
- Press the BTB connector firmly until you feel a soft click.
Installing a new earpiece
- Insert the new earpiece into the opening next to the front camera slot.
- Press the BTB connector firmly until you feel a soft click. Ensure both the earpiece and the connector sit flat.
Reassembling your Fairphone
- Slot the top unit back into place where the old top unit was located, ensuring the cables underneath rest correctly inside the railing.
- Use your Torx T5 screwdriver to re-attach the six black screws around the top unit.
- Snap the upper back cover into place. Always attach the upper back cover before inserting the battery. Inserting the battery first can bend the metal flaps on top.
- Place the battery back inside its compartment.
- Reconnect the battery BTB connector and close the connector cover over the connector.
- Re-screw the five short inner screws around the battery.
- Slide the lower back cover back onto the phone and re-screw the two long outer screws.
- Turn on your Fairphone, open the Camera app to test your new camera, or make a test phone call to verify your new earpiece.
