How to replace the loudspeaker and USB-C port in The Fairphone (Gen. 6)

Replacing the loudspeaker or USB-C port on your phone is quick and simple. Follow our video guide or the step-by-step instructions below to safely replace these spare parts. Note that the loudspeaker spare part also contains the vibration motor.

Before you begin, read the important information in How to replace spare parts on The Fairphone (Gen. 6).

What you need before you begin

  • Applies to: The Fairphone (Gen. 6)
  • Required tools: Torx T5 screwdriver, a plastic card or pick, and a small container to keep your screws safe
  • Spare parts: Fairphone (Gen. 6) Loudspeaker or USB-C port

Removing the back cover

  1. Power off the phone by long pressing the Power button. Depending on your settings, press the Power button and Volume Up button together to open the power menu.
  2. Place the phone on a flat surface with the screen facing down.
  3. Remove the two screws on the top left and top right of the lower back cover.
Outer screws are longer than inner screws. Keep your outer and inner screws separated so reassembly is easy.
  1. Slide the lower back cover off toward the bottom of the phone.

Removing the battery

  1. Keep the phone facing screen down on your flat surface.
  2. Use your Torx T5 screwdriver to remove the five screws around the battery.
  3. Keep all five screws safely inside your container.
  4. Slowly lift the connector cover on top, disconnect the board-to-board (BTB) connector, and lift out the battery.

Removing the loudspeaker

  1. Use your Torx T5 screwdriver to remove the five black screws on the loudspeaker unit.
  2. Keep all five screws safely inside your container.
  3. Locate the small notch on the left side of the loudspeaker unit.
  4. Use a plastic card or pick inside the notch to wedge the loudspeaker out.

Removing the USB-C port

You must remove the loudspeaker unit before you can remove the USB-C port.
  1. Use a plastic card or pick to disconnect the BTB connector above the USB-C port.
  2. Gently lift out the USB-C port.

Installing the new USB-C port

  1. Insert the new USB-C port into the open slot.
  2. Press the BTB connector firmly until you feel a soft click. Ensure both the USB-C port and the connector sit flat.

Installing the new loudspeaker

  1. Insert the new loudspeaker unit into place.
  2. Press the BTB connector firmly until you feel a soft click.
  3. Use your Torx T5 screwdriver to re-attach the five black screws into the new loudspeaker unit.

Reassembling your Fairphone

  1. Place the battery back inside its compartment.
  2. Reconnect the battery BTB connector and close the connector cover over the connector.
  3. Re-screw the five short inner screws around the battery.
  4. Slide the lower back cover back onto the phone and re-screw the two long outer screws.
  5. Press and hold the Power button to turn on your Fairphone.
