How to replace a speaker unit on Fairbuds XL

If you experience audio failure or need to replace a damaged left or right earcup, you can install a replacement speaker unit yourself. Follow this guide to safely complete the repair and protect your device warranty.

The Fairbuds XL serial number is located inside the original left speaker cavity behind the battery. Replacement left speaker spare parts do not have a serial number printed on them. Before removing your original left speaker unit, take off the cover, remove the battery, and write down the serial number for future warranty claims.

What you need before you begin

  • A clean, flat work surface and a small container to store loose screws
  • A plastic card or guitar pick for leverage
  • Your replacement speaker unit from our online shop
  • The correct screwdriver for your model:
    • Fairbuds XL (2023): Phillips #00 screwdriver
    • Fairbuds XL (2025): Phillips #0 screwdriver

  • Fairbuds XL (2023): Features a speckled finish in light green or black.
  • Fairbuds XL (2025): Features a solid finish without speckles in darker green or black.

How to replace your speaker unit

  1. Turn off your Fairbuds XL.
  2. Remove the ear cushion from the side you are replacing by holding the plastic rim and twisting (Right cushion: away from you; Left cushion: toward you).
  3. Lift off the speaker cover using your fingers or plastic card, then lift out the battery.
  4. Locate the two screws securing the speaker unit to the headband base.
  5. Unscrew both screws carefully using your Phillips screwdriver and place them in your container.
  6. Wiggle the headband base slightly to loosen it, then gently pull the speaker unit away from the headband base.
  7. Unplug the internal USB-C cable from the top socket of the old speaker unit.
  8. Plug the internal USB-C cable into the top socket of your replacement speaker unit.
  9. Place the new speaker unit onto the headband base and tighten the two screws to secure it.
  10. Reinsert the battery using the correct model orientation:
    • Fairbuds XL (2023): Insert with "yours to open, yours to keep" facing upward.
    • Fairbuds XL (2025): Insert with "fairphone" and the battery icon facing upward.
  11. Press the speaker cover back into place, starting from the top and working downward until it snaps closed.
  12. Align the arrows on your ear cushion and speaker unit, then twist until it clicks into place (Right cushion: toward you; Left cushion: away from you).
