How to use Android Auto with your Fairphone
Android Auto connects your smartphone to your car display so you can access navigation, music, and calls safely while driving. This guide covers how to set up Android Auto on your phone and explains system compatibility.
What you need before you begin
- A vehicle or car stereo compatible with Android Auto.
- A high-quality USB-C cable for a wired connection, or a car display that supports wireless Android Auto.
- The Fairphone running the stock Fairphone Android OS.
Cable quality plays a major role in keeping a stable connection. If Android Auto disconnects unexpectedly, try using a short, high-speed USB-C cable certified for data transfer.
How to connect your phone to Android Auto
- Turn on your vehicle and make sure it is safely parked.
- Connect your USB cable to your car port and plug the other end into the Fairphone. For wireless connections, enable Bluetooth on your car display and pair your phone.
- Tap Android Auto on your car display screen.
- Unlock your phone screen and follow the on-screen instructions to grant necessary app permissions.
- Once setup is complete, your preferred apps will appear directly on your car screen.
Compatibility with /e/OS (Murena)
Android Auto is generally not supported if your phone runs /e/OS.
The /e/OS operating system is built specifically to protect your privacy by removing proprietary Google services. Because Android Auto relies directly on core Google system files, it cannot run natively without them.
Attempting to manually install Google services on /e/OS compromises the privacy-first design of the operating system. It also frequently leads to connection failures, such as Communication error 22. If you rely on Android Auto for daily driving, we recommend using the standard Fairphone Android OS.
