How to set up, reformat, and manage microSD card storage on your Fairphone

Setting up a new microSD card ensures your phone stores files correctly, while reformatting an existing card helps resolve app crashes and storage errors. Follow this guide to set up your card and choose the right storage type for your needs.

Formatting permanently erases all files saved on your card. Always back up your data before formatting.

How to set up a new microSD card

  1. Swipe down from the top of your screen to open your notifications panel.
  2. Tap the SD card detected notification. If the card was used on another device, the notification title may differ.
  3. Select your preferred storage type:
    • For portable storage, tap Format.
    • For internal storage, tap Format another way → Format.

How to reformat an existing microSD card

Reformatting your microSD card can clear software errors. If your card is set as internal storage and you experience issues opening apps or saving photos, reformatting to portable storage usually fixes the problem.

Reformatting from internal to portable storage:

  1. Open Settings → Storage.
  2. Tap This device and select your microSD card.
  3. Tap the three dots menu in the top right corner.
  4. Tap Format → Format card.

Reformatting from portable to internal storage:

  1. Open Settings → Storage.
  2. Tap This device and select External.
  3. Tap the three dots menu in the top right corner.
  4. Tap Format another way → Format card.

Moving media and compatible apps to your card during internal storage setup frees up phone memory, but some apps may not function when stored on a card.

Understanding portable vs. internal storage

You can format your microSD card as portable storage or internal storage. Your choice depends on how you plan to use The Fairphone (Gen. 6) or your existing model.

Portable storage (Recommended)

  • Has fewer compatibility issues.
  • Stores media files such as photos, videos, and music.
  • Lets you remove the microSD card to transfer files between your phone and a computer.
  • Keeps files unencrypted for easy access across multiple devices.
  • Does not support installing apps directly on the card.

Internal storage

  • Allows you to install apps directly on the card to free up internal phone memory.
  • Stores photos, videos, and music.
  • Encrypts the card so it cannot be read by computers or other devices.
  • May slow down phone performance compared to built-in storage.
  • May cause software instability or app issues.
