How to fix choppy or disconnected Bluetooth audio on Fairbuds, Fairbuds 2, and Fairbuds XL

  • Updated

If your Fairbuds experience choppy audio or unexpected disconnects, adjusting your audio codec or environment usually restores a smooth, uninterrupted connection.

Applies to

  • Fairbuds
  • Fairbuds 2
  • Fairbuds XL

What causes audio interruptions

Your Fairbuds rely on standard Bluetooth radio frequencies (RF) to stream sound from your paired phone. Audio stutters or drops typically happen when:

  • High-resolution audio formats are enabled: Formats like LDAC or Hi-Res Audio transfer significantly more data per second, making the connection more sensitive to interference.
  • Network saturation: Operating your Fairbuds in places with many active wireless signals (like crowded transit hubs or busy office spaces) can cause signal congestion.
  • Physical barriers: Walls, heavy clothing, or keeping your phone in a deep pocket or bag can block the signal between your phone and your Fairbuds.

How to restore a smooth audio connection

Follow these steps to improve your connection stability and eliminate audio drops:

  1. Turn off LDAC, LE or Hi-Res Audio: Open the Bluetooth settings on your phone, select your Fairbuds, and disable LDAC, LE audio mode, or Hi-Res Audio. Switching to standard Bluetooth codecs like AAC or SBC stabilizes playback, especially while walking or in public spaces.
  2. Reduce physical obstacles: Place your phone closer to your Fairbuds and keep it on the same side of your body to maintain a direct line of sight.
  3. Move away from wireless interference: If you are near dense crowds or heavy Wi-Fi routers, step into a less crowded area to reduce signal congestion.
