Fairphone 2: Spare Parts Availability

Some spare parts for the Fairphone 2 are not available anymore. After supporting the Fairphone 2 for more than 5 years since its launch in 2015, we reached the limit of our stock for some spare parts.

Discontinued

If a spare part is permanently sold out in our shop, we will not produce it anymore. We will still have stock for repairs and replacements covered by the manufacturing warranty. Sometimes, we have refurbished spare parts available. If not, the item is End of Life - not available in any way anymore.

Scroll down for details of a specific spare part or the frequently asked questions (FAQ).

Refurbished

Spare parts that are returned to us, we collect and select. The best ones, we refurbish in our factory. The ones that pass the tests, we make available. We always make sure we have enough for repairs covered by the manufacturing warranty. If that is covered, we offer the remaining stock also for repairs that are not covered by the manufacturing warranty. If the refurbished stock then allows it, we offer them for sale in our online shop.

  • Fairphone 2 Top Module version 1 - refurbished available via repair.
  • Fairphone 2 Bottom Module - refurbished available via repair.

End of life

Some spare parts are not available at all anymore:

If your module is still covered by the manufacturing warranty, but the module is discontinued and not available as refurbished, contact our Customer Support directly. In case it is not covered by the manufacturing warranty anymore, we recommend visiting the marketplace on our community-driven forum to see if another user has a module for you.

Or, you can recycle your Fairphone 2 (and other phones) via our Reuse & Recycle program. We offer a Gift card for our online shop at the value of your device in return. This might be interesting when you want to upgrade to a Fairphone 3+ or a Fairphone 4.

History

The Fairphone 2 launched in 2015 and was the first phone on the market with a modular architecture. It was the first model we had to design ourselves as there were no other modular phones in the market yet. To extend the lifespan of a phone, it needs to be repairable by the user. To be repairable, it needs to be modular and have spare parts available. Being the first to make a modular smartphone, we encountered many new challenges, also in the supply chain. One of the challenges of a modular phone is to have enough stock of spare parts available. So we had to forecast:

  • How many spare part components we actually needed in the long term, for both our online shop and our repair center.
  • How long the manufacturers of specific components would keep producing the required spare parts.
  • How to limit overproduction of a single module to prevent producing e-waste.
  • All without historical data to guide us.

Even though we learned a lot, and mitigated what we could, we are now at the limit of our stock for some spare parts.

However, with Fairphone 2 we reached our goal of extending the lifespan of the phone to more than the market average of two years. It launched in 2015 and lasts for more than five years with a loyal following of users. We have enough supply of parts such as batteries and screens, to further increase the lifespan of the remaining Fairphone 2’s!

Fairphone 2 Top Module

V1 Refurbished/V2 End of Life

The first version of the Fairphone 2 Top Module with 2MP selfie-camera shipped with the Fairphone since launch in 2015.
In 2017 we offered an upgraded version of the Fairphone 2 Top Module, with 5MP selfie-camera. The Fairphone 2 shipped from that date with a Fairphone 2 Top Module version 2. The Fairphone 2 Top Module version 2 was also available in our online shop so earlier Fairphone 2 owners could upgrade their Selfie-camera.

Our manufacturer stopped producing the Fairphone 2 Top Module version 2 and we had to stop selling it in August 2020. So, we made a limited supply available of the Fairphone 2 Top Module version 1 at a reduced price. This allowed you to keep using your phone for longer and reduce e-waste. This supply ran out in March 2022.

We offer Refurbished Fairphone 2 Top Modules, which can be replaced via our repair center. Keep in mind that the costs for this repair are not covered by the manufacturing warranty and require sending your device to our repair center.

In case you encounter issues with your camera, troubleshoot it first to find out if a replacement would fix the issue.

We can offer replacements covered by the manufacturing warranty. If your Fairphone 2 or replacement spare part is not covered by the manufacturing warranty anymore, we can offer you a refurbished replacement bottom module via a repair by us. Be aware that we do not cover the costs involved. To start a repair of your Fairphone 2, contact our Customer Support.

You can also try the marketplace on our community-driven forum for a spare part, or a complete Fairphone 2 to harvest for spare parts.

Considering an upgrade to a Fairphone 4? Recycle your Fairphone 2 via our Reuse & Recycle program and receive its value as a Fairphone Gift Card.

In case you consider saying goodbye to your trusty Fairphone 2 and want to upgrade to a Fairphone 4, you might be interested in our Recycling program

We do not have a substitute for the batteries, as lithium-ion batteries can not be refurbished.

Important
- We strongly discourage the use of any non-Fairphone batteries in your Fairphone 2 from a safety perspective.
- If you need to discard your Fairphone 2 Battery: do so as soon as possible via your local small chemical waste program. Do not leave them lingering somewhere in your house or office, especially when the battery is swelling.
For the options available to you, you can check the website of your local municipality with the search subject 'Lithium-ion batteries'.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: How can I get my Fairphone 2 to last longer?

Our community online is a great resource for tips on keeping your phone for longer. Go to our marketplace and forum to learn what our community has to say on increasing the longevity of your phone. For some tips on how to make your Fairphone 2 last longer, see our blog post The most sustainable phone is the one you already own.

Q: What lessons did you learn with Fairphone 2?

We learned a lot from the design and production of the Fairphone 2. With your support, we were able to implement many of the lessons learned to the design and production of the Fairphone 3.

For example, we learned that planning far in advance and more thorough planning are crucial, particularly when it comes to the end of life of a phone. We’ve continued to make improvements to our spare parts supply chain and stock management.

Q: Am I entitled to a refund?

If your device is still in warranty and you experience a defect we cannot resolve (or multiple defects), then we provide two options.

  • A discount of fair market value for your device based on its age and condition.
  • Or, you can combine the recycling offer with the cash back offer to go towards a significant discount on the purchase of a New Life Edition Fairphone 3(+) or a new Fairphone 4.

This applies only for those under manufacturing warranty who purchased the Fairphone 2 from us or other sales channels (excluding subscriptions from Orange France, Phone Co-Op, KPN, T-Mobile Austria, Mobilcom Debitel, Vodafone NL, ETC and the People’s Operator). If you purchased one with a subscription, we continue to offer a replacement device within your warranty.

Q: I’ve recently purchased my Fairphone 2, what does end of life mean for me?

Fairphone aimed to offer 3 to 5 years of spare parts availability starting from when it launched. Since the phone launched in 2015, that means we have achieved this goal and now need to begin phasing out certain parts of the phone.

Parts such as batteries and screens will still be available for you to replace. Besides that, we are still updating software; we’ve upgraded the Fairphone 2 to Android 10. This will help increase the longevity of your phone. Our online forum and community are also available to help with repairs and information on spare parts.

Q: I’m out of warranty with core module issues. I want to repair my core module to extend the life of my device, but I don't want to upgrade. What can I do?

If you are experiencing any core issues, troubleshoot or contact our Customer Support. Even if your phone is out-of-warranty, they will help you properly diagnose the problem you are experiencing (hardware/software) and inform you of the options available. If troubleshooting doesn’t fix your issue, you can recycle and upgrade to Fairphone 3+ or Fairphone 4, for example.

Q: Does the Fairphone 2 end of life mean no more software updates as well? What about bugs that are still present, will development stop as well?

We want to keep providing support as long as possible to support our goal of longevity. Upgrading the Fairphone 2 to Android 10 gave us the opportunity to keep offering support and security updates for a longer period of time. We aim to provide software support until the end of 2022.

Q: What happens to returned phones?

We dismantle any returned phones and use them for spare parts. We refurbish or recycle anything that is broken.

Q: The price of an OOW repair with an Fairphone 2 refurbished Core Module is now € 249.90 which is higher than the price of the Fairphone 3 Core Module (€ 209.90). Why will it cost me more to fix a Fairphone 2 than a Fairphone 3?

Fairphone 2 Core Modules are more expensive than the Fairphone 3 Core Modules because we produced them at lower volumes, which means that each unit cost us more to make. With Fairphone 3, we began to take advantage of the decreased cost opportunities that high volume manufacturing provides.

As Fairphone grows, we hope to continue this trend, to be able to offer more affordable repairs in the future.
