Erase all data (factory reset)

Important: Some of these steps only work if your Fairphone has Android 13 or above. Learn how to Check and update your software version.

A factory reset will return your Fairphone to its original settings, erasing all personal data and downloaded apps. This can be helpful if you're experiencing software issues, selling your device, or want to start fresh.

Before you start

Reset your Fairphone (Settings app)

To reset your Fairphone from the Settings app, follow these steps:

  1. On your Fairphone, go to Settings → System → Reset options.
  2. Tap Erase all data (factory reset).
    • If you have an eSIM, you can also tap Erase eSIMs to erase it from your Fairphone.
  3. Tap Erase all data.
    • If needed, confirm your pattern, PIN or password and then tap Erase all data.

Reset your Fairphone (Android recovery)

Important: These steps are recommended for advanced users. If you are a beginner, start with our regular steps: Reset your Fairphone (Settings app).

If you can't reset your Fairphone from the Settings app, try using Android recovery:

  1. If your Fairphone is on, turn it off.
  2. Press and hold the Power and Volume up buttons at the same time.
    • When you see the Fairphone logo, release the Power and Volume up buttons.
  3. Use the Volume up/down buttons to select Wipe data/factory reset. Press the Power button once to confirm.
  4. Use the Volume up/down buttons to select Factory data reset. Press the Power button once to confirm.
    • When the reset is complete, you'll see Data wipe complete at the bottom of the Android recovery menu.
  5. Use the Volume up/down buttons to select Reboot system now.
  6. Press the Power button one last time to confirm.

Factory Reset Protection

Factory Reset Protection can prevent others from using your Fairphone if it gets reset without your permission. For example, in case your Fairphone is lost or stolen.

To set up Factory Reset Protection, follow these steps:

  1. Add a Google account to your Fairphone.
  2. Use a screen lock with protection.

Once you've added a Google account and use a screen lock with protection, you'll need to confirm your screen lock and Google account password to reset your Fairphone.

I want to turn off Factory Reset Protection

To turn off Factory Reset Protection, remove any Google accounts from your Fairphone. For details, see Add or remove an account on Android (Android Help).

I can't sign in to my Google account

If you can't sign in to your Google account, see Can't sign in to your Google Account (Google Account Help) for support.

I have a second-hand Fairphone

If you have a second-hand Fairphone, contact the previous owner to remove their Google account. This is necessary if Factory Reset Protection is active.
