How to stay connected with 4G Calling (2G and 3G shutdown)

Network operators are increasingly shutting down legacy networks, like 2G and 3G, to free up capacity that can be used by 4G and 5G services instead. This shift is affecting not only Fairphone, but the entire smartphone industry.

To continue making calls in areas where 2G and 3G have been shut down, your device must use 4G Calling (also known as Voice over LTE, or VoLTE). If you have a Fairphone 3 or later, your phone supports 4G Calling.

Some of these steps only work if your Fairphone has Android 13 or above. Find out How to check and update your software version.

How to stay connected

To get the best experience and make sure your Fairphone remains fully functional following the 2G or 3G shutdown, we recommend the following:

Step 1: Use a supported network operator

  2. Tap on the SIM you want to change settings for.
  3. Tap 4G Calling to toggle on or off.

Note: These options may be named differently or hidden, depending on your network operator.

Step 3: Keep your software updated

Software updates frequently contain important network configuration settings that help your Fairphone communicate with your network operator.

Make sure that your phone is up-to-date. If you are not running the latest software, or you are not sure, learn how to Check and update your software version.

What if my operator isn’t on the list?

If your network operator is not supported, 4G Calling may still work, but we can’t guarantee a stable or consistent connection. If you experience issues:

  • Contact your operator: You can ask them to "manually provision" your SIM for VoLTE or request that they add Fairphone to their list of supported devices.
  • Consider a switch: If your operator can't provide support, switch to an operator we have officially tested for the best results.

Future network operator support

We continuously test network configurations to ensure the best possible call quality and stability. As this is an ongoing process, the list above is regularly updated to reflect currently supported operators.

We recommend checking this page for the latest information on network compatibility in your area.

Dual SIM and 4G Calling

All of our phones support Dual SIM, Dual Standby (DSDS). If you are using two supported SIM cards with 4G Calling enabled, both SIMs are active and ready to receive calls in standby mode, even if 2G and 3G networks have been shut down.

Note: You can only use one SIM at a time for an active call. While one is in use, the other remains in standby.

Can't set up 4G Calling

If 4G Calling isn't working, you can often fix it in just a few simple steps. Find out how: Having trouble making or receiving calls.
