- These steps only work if your Fairphone has Android 13 or above. Learn how to Check and update your software version.
- Wi-Fi Calling does not handle the full call. You'll still need to be connected to a mobile network to make a call.
4G and Wi-Fi Calling, also known as VoLTE and VoWi-Fi, offer several improvements over traditional calling, such as higher-quality audio, faster call connecting, and the ability to make calls and use mobile data at the same time.
- Check if your network operator is supported
- Turn 4G and Wi-Fi calling on or off
- 2G and 3G switch-off
Check if your network operator is supported

Turn 4G and Wi-Fi Calling on or off
To turn on 4G or Wi-Fi Calling, your network operator must support 4G and/or Wi-Fi Calling. On your Fairphone:
- Go to Settings → Network & internet → SIMs.
- Tap on the SIM you want to change settings for.
- Tap 4G Calling or Wi-Fi Calling to turn on or off.
Keep in mind, these options may be named differently or hidden, depending on your network operator.
2G and 3G switch off
Network operators are increasingly switching off legacy networks, like 2G and 3G, to free up capacity that can be used by 4G and 5G services instead.
If your network operator has switched off, or is planning to switch off 2G and 3G, you may not be able to make calls or send and receive SMS.
If you have a Fairphone 3 or above, you can make voice calls and send or receive SMS over 4G or Wi-Fi instead. Make sure that you:
- Check and update your software version.
- Use a SIM from a supported network operator.
- Turn on 4G and Wi-Fi Calling.
If your network operator is not supported, 4G and Wi-Fi Calling may still work, but turning them on may cause call and connectivity issues. For the best results, use a SIM from a supported network operator.
