VoLTE & VoWi-Fi

VoLTE and VoWi-Fi can sound like alien acronyms, but they are widely used modern technologies that are available on the Fairphone 3 and newer.

VoLTE is short for Voice over LTE, also known as Enhanced 4G LTE Mode or 4G Calling (or sometimes 5G Calling). Here's what it does in essence:

  • Allows you to use mobile data while you're in a call, so you can browse and talk at the same time.
  • Changes how some of the call data is handled, improving sound quality and stability.

VoWi-Fi is short for Voice over Wi-Fi, also known as Wi-Fi calling. This feature allows calls to use your Wi-Fi connection, improving call sound quality and stability.

-IMPORTANT-
VoWi-Fi does not handle the full phone call and you still need to be connected to a mobile network to make a call.
In case you need to call over the internet, without any mobile network coverage, you'll need to use a service like WhatsApp, Viber, Telegram, Skype, or similar.

 


How to turn VoLTE & VoWi-Fi on and off

First, your provider must support VoLTE and/or VoWi-Fi and allow the settings to be visible on the phone. It's also possible that your specific plan doesn't include these features, so check with your provider.

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap on Network & internet.
  3. Tap on the SIM card you want to change settings for.
  4. Scroll down and locate VoLTE or Wi-Fi Calling and change the settings to your preference.

 


VoLTE & VoWi-Fi compatibility

The Fairphones are technically capable of using VoLTE and VoWiFi technologies. On the Fairphone 4 and 5, you can have both SIMs connected with 4G and VoLTE at the same time, while the Fairphone 3(+) supports VoLTE only on SIM1. However, they might not work perfectly with some network providers. We are working on completing the partnerships with more network providers. Partnerships give us the opportunity to test and improve the service better.

Some network operators lock the possibility of changing and/or visualizing those options.

 

-IMPORTANT-
Some Fairphone customers have experienced issues while using these features on networks that aren't supported yet.
If you're experiencing call issues and VoLTE and/or VoWiFi are not yet explicitly supported for your operator, we advise you to disable them. A common issue is showing "Unknown caller" when you get a call.

 

Currently, we support the following Network Operators on the latest software version. Most will work on older versions as well, but the full table is up to date with the latest version.

Issues with calls

If enabling and disabling VoLTE and VoWi-Fi doesn't help resolve issues during calls, first make sure your phone is updated to the latest Fairphone OS.
