Fairphone's Operating System
By default the Fairphone comes with Android OS and a set of preinstalled Google Mobile Apps. You can download additional apps on your phone from the Google Play Store.

In this article, you'll find information about which Android version is currently used on our devices, along with some basic information.
Fairphone 5
The Fairphone 5 launched with Android 13.
To take advantage of the latest improvements and security fixes, make sure to update your Fairphone to the latest software release.
Software support roadmap
Thanks to the unique Qualcomm® QCM6490 extended life chipset, we can provide support for longer than ever. For Fairphone 5, we are planning:
- 5 Android version upgrades.
- At least 8 (we'll try 10!) years of security updates.
- Monthly security updates for about 3 years, and then we will switch to bi-monthly security updates* from mid-2026 until the end of the software support.
Fairphone 4
The Fairphone 4 started shipping with Android 11 and it's currently running Android 13.
To take advantage of the latest improvements and security fixes, make sure to update your Fairphone to the latest software release.
Software support roadmap
We aim to support Fairphone 4 with security and software upgrades for five years from its launch date (September 2021), trying to reach 7 years. For Fairphone 4, we guarantee software support until at least 2026 and may extend that to 2028, and we did do upgrades to Android 12 and Android 13.
We aim to upgrade for Android 14 in Q4 2024 or Q1 2025.
We did monthly security updates for about 2,5 years, and then we did switch to bi-monthly security updates* since 2024. Furthermore, we will keep the bi-monthly pace until the end of the software support.
We also aim to provide upgrades for Android 15 and do security patching until mid 2028, but it is not confirmed yet.
Fairphone 3(+)
The Fairphone 3(+) started shipping with Android 10 and it's currently running Android 13. It will be the last Android version for Fairphone 3, we aim for doing security updates until 2026.
To take advantage of the latest improvements and security fixes, make sure to update your Fairphone to the latest software release.
Software support roadmap
We guarantee software support on Fairphone 3(+) with security and software upgrades for about 5 years after the first launch date (August 2019), aiming for reaching 7 years with security updates until mid-2026.
We did monthly security updates for about 1,5 years, and then we did switch to bi-monthly security updates* since end of 2020. Furthermore, we will keep he bi-monthly pace until the end of the software support.
Fairphone 2
The Fairphone 2 started shipping with Android 5 and it's currently running Android 10.
Software support roadmap
We released the last software update for the Fairphone 2 in March 2023. This means that the phone will no longer get security updates. Once the security update expires (some time in May 2023) some apps will stop working and we don't recommend connecting the phone to the Internet.
Some custom ROMs might still continue to provide updates with new security patches after our official support has ended. We recommend checking out /e/OS or LineageOS.
