How long will my Fairphone receive software and security updates?

Every Fairphone smartphone comes with a specific Android version to keep your phone secure and running smoothly. This guide helps you find the current operating system version, future software upgrades, and support lifespans for your specific Fairphone model.

Default operating system and app choices

By default, each Fairphone smartphone comes with the Android operating system (OS) and a preinstalled set of Google Mobile Apps. You can download additional apps on your phone from the Google Play Store.

Software support for The Fairphone (Gen. 6)+

The Fairphone (Gen. 6) launched with Android 15. As of March 16, 2026, you can update the phone to Android 16.

To get the newest improvements and security patches, make sure to update your Fairphone to the latest software release.

Future software timeline for The Fairphone (Gen. 6)

With a powerful Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chipset, the Fairphone guarantees smooth and reliable performance for many years. The phone is built to last, offering eight years of software support until 2033 and a five-year warranty.

This support timeline means Fairphone commits to going beyond the legal requirement to provide software support for more than five years after manufacturing ends. Fairphone is the only smartphone brand in this category to offer this many Android upgrades, which helps keep the phone secure and up to date.

Fairphone will provide monthly security updates for about three years, and then switch to bi-monthly security updates from June 2028 until software support ends.

Software support for Fairphone 5+

The Fairphone 5 launched with Android 13.

To get the newest improvements and security patches, make sure to update your Fairphone to the latest software release.

Future software timeline for Fairphone 5

Thanks to the unique Qualcomm® QCM6490 extended life chipset, Fairphone can provide software support for a longer time. For Fairphone 5, the planned support includes:

  • five Android version upgrades
  • At least eight years of security updates, with a goal to reach 10 years
  • Monthly security updates for about three years, switching to bi-monthly security updates from mid-2026 until software support ends
Software support for Fairphone 4+

The Fairphone 4 began shipping with Android 11.

Future software timeline for Fairphone 4

Fairphone aims to support Fairphone 4 with security updates and software upgrades for five years from the launch date in September 2021, with a goal to reach seven years. Fairphone guarantees software support until at least 2028.

Fairphone provided monthly security updates for about 2.5 years, and then switched to bi-monthly security updates in 2024. This bi-monthly schedule will continue until software support ends.

Software support for Fairphone 3 and Fairphone 3++

Fairphone 3 launched in 2019 with Android 9, and Fairphone 3+ launched in 2020 with Android 10. Android 13 was the final major operating system upgrade for both models. Fairphone provided the final security patch in June 2026.

Official support for Fairphone 3 and Fairphone 3+ ended in August 2026. Because the final security patches expire in June 2026, these phones are vulnerable to security threats.

Please keep the following risks in mind:

  • Security risk: The phone no longer receives official security updates. Using the phone online poses a high risk to your personal data.
  • App compatibility: Many modern apps have stopped working or may perform unstably due to the outdated Android version.
  • Usage recommendation: Fairphone strongly advises against using Fairphone 3(+) for banking, sensitive communications, or any tasks that require an internet connection.
