Check and update your software version

Software updates contain important security and privacy-focused improvements. We recommend keeping your Fairphone updated with the latest software version at all times.

 


Latest software version

Important: The availability of some updates may be delayed by up to a few weeks. This depends on your country and network operator.

Check which software version you have

To check which software version you have:

  1. Go to SettingsAbout phone Build number.
  2. Compare your build number with the latest software version.

 


Update to the latest software version

Important: Back up and charge your Fairphone to at least 80% before updating to the latest software version.

If your Fairphone is connected to the internet, you'll get a notification when an update is available for you. Open it and follow the steps to update to the latest software version.

If you don't get a notification:

  1. Go to SettingsSystem → System update.
  2. Tap Check for update to check if an update is available.
  3. If an update appears, tap the Update button.

 


Frequently asked questions

My Fairphone feels warm

You may notice your Fairphone feels warm during or after the update process. This is normal, as your phone uses more power optimising the new software version.

My Fairphone is frozen or does not react

If the screen does not react anymore, reboot your Fairphone:

  1. Press the power button for at least 15 seconds.
    Or, remove the battery for at least 5 seconds, then put it back.
  2. Try to install the software update again.

My Fairphone screen stays black or does not boot

  1. Make sure the battery of the device is not empty: use the correct charger.
  2. Turn off the phone.
    • If it does not respond, remove the battery out for 5 seconds, then put it back.
  3. Plug the charger in and wait a few seconds for the device to boot in charging mode (when the charging animation is displayed).
    If the device does not charge at all, contact our Customer Support.

My Fairphone reboots after and gets stuck at "Optimising apps"

  1. Reboot the device in Safe mode.
  2. Go to Settings System System update and retry.

My Fairphone is in a boot loop or continuously restarts

Try to perform a Factory reset.

There was an issue while preparing to restart

If you receive this message while trying to update your Fairphone, wait at least a few hours, then try the update again.

I can't update my Fairphone
