Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

What is the difference between The Fairphone (Gen. 6) and Fairphone 5?

With the launch of The Fairphone (Gen. 6), we want to provide our customers with the satisfaction of getting maximum value from our products. The Fairphone (Gen. 6) has:

  • A powerful Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset that’s future-proofed until 2033, with at least six Android upgrades from Android 15 onwards.
  • It also has a state-of-the-art camera system, with the main camera packing a 50MP Sony Lytia 700C sensor, allowing you to enjoy crystal-clear details and rich colors in any lighting.
  • With a Gorilla Glass 7i scratch-resistant display and an IP55 rating for dust and moisture, it is tough and durable, easily passing multiple military-grade drop tests (similar to the Fairphone 5).
  • The Fairphone (Gen. 6) has a compact 6.3” OLED screen, LTPO technology and a lighter build (8% less than the Fairphone 5).
  • With The Fairphone (Gen. 6), we’ve introduced Fairphone Moments, which allows you to physically switch between two distinct user experiences - the regular smartphone mode with full functionality, and a brand new minimalist Fairphone Moments experience for fewer distractions. This gives you the freedom to disconnect when you want and stay fully present in real life or customize your own experiences such as focus and travel modes.
  • The Fairphone (Gen. 6) has our lowest carbon footprint yet, made using renewable energy across key production stages - including the assembly, battery, display, camera, and chipset (in collaboration with Micron and Qualcomm).

Are The Fairphone (Gen. 6) cameras better than the Fairphone 5?

Yes, we’ve made big improvements with The Fairphone (Gen. 6) camera. For the main camera, we chose a recent Sony Lytia sensor, as it is the sensor people rely on most for everyday photography. We also enhanced our tuning capabilities to deliver better image quality and improve our DXO rating, bringing it in line with other phones at this price point.

The ultra-wide camera now has a newer sensor as well. While it has slightly fewer megapixels, it delivers better overall performance. For the front camera, we have opted for a high-quality Samsung sensor with autofocus - because sharp, clear selfies matter more than just megapixels!

Paired with a more powerful chipset and improved software tuning, The Fairphone (Gen. 6) takes a big step forward in camera quality. We’re confident users will see the difference.

When will you launch The Fairphone (Gen. 6) in the USA?

The Fairphone (Gen. 6) will be available in the USA via our partner Murena as of August 2025 with a de-Googled version only, and it is already available for pre-order. You can find more info here.

How long will The Fairphone (Gen. 6) last?

We designed The Fairphone (Gen. 6) to last as long as possible, making it robust and modular to enable easy repairs, customization, and upgrades.

We want to empower users to take ownership of their products by offering them easy options for maintenance and repairs. How long it lasts will also depend on the user and on how they treat their phone. But to make it as easy as possible, we have created an ecosystem that supports long-lasting use, first-hand or second-hand. We offer:

  • Reasonably priced spare parts and repair tutorials
  • Regular software platform updates (latest Android software) and security updates
  • 5-year warranty (to be activated via fairphone.com/warranty)
  • Access to source code and open source development encouraged
  • Active reminders to perform regular maintenance, making sure the phone remains in good state for as long as possible
  • Financial rewards via the “Keep Club” loyalty program for every time a repair is performed and for every year a phone is kept in use

What are the plans for Android and security updates with The Fairphone (Gen. 6)?

We are planning to provide at least Android 16 to Android 22, so seven years of Android upgrades from launch and one extra year of security updates only, so eight years of software support in total!

How does the 5-year warranty work with The Fairphone (Gen. 6)?

The majority of smartphones are covered by a 2-year warranty by default. With The Fairphone (Gen. 6), we go the extra mile to cover your new phone for up to 5 years at no additional cost and no matter where or how you purchased the phone originally.

All you need to do is register your Fairphone. This also applies if you received it as a gift. We kindly ask you to do this at your earliest convenience.

What is the Fairphone Moments experience and how does it work?

We saw an opportunity to offer something different—a phone that adapts to your needs. Inspired by growing interest in minimalist screens and physical buttons, we developed a unique Fairphone Moments experience. With a simple flick of a physical button, users can customize a minimal interface that filters out distractions and pushes only what the user needs at that particular moment. This concept resonated so strongly with us that it became part of our wider brand identity—offering users not just a phone, but a way to take control of their digital habits.

What is an OLED display on The Fairphone (Gen. 6) and why is it better?

The Fairphone (Gen. 6) has a 6.3’’ LTPO OLED display. The screen’s glass is Corning Gorilla Glass 7i 0.7mm and fully laminated. OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode, which is a type of screen technology used in smartphones. OLED offers a higher refresh rate and greater contrast. This results in colors appearing incredibly vibrant and dark areas being exceptionally dark.

OLED is also thinner, which means we were able to achieve a thinner device that is more future proof with the latest technology.

What operating system does The Fairphone (Gen. 6) come with?

The Fairphone (Gen. 6) comes with Android 15 installed. Android 16 is expected to be released in the second quarter of 2025, at the same time as the launch of The Fairphone (Gen. 6). We would love to have launched The Fairphone (Gen. 6) with the very latest Android version. However, it takes months of work from our team to develop software for a smartphone. We simply could not access the Android 16 code early enough to base our software on Android 16 at launch. We thank you for your patience!

Why launch The Fairphone (Gen. 6) when the Fairphone 5 launched in 2023?

Fairphone is trying to change the industry from the inside out. Our mission is to establish a viable market for sustainable consumer electronics. Part of this is recognizing the demands and changing the technology on the market.
Our new device, The Fairphone (Gen. 6), enables us to take the next steps in circularity, fairness, and longevity. It is a device that will be (technologically) relevant for years to come for customers who need a new phone. Also, as a company, we want to appeal to new customers to reach a wider audience while continuing our long-term support for other Fairphones.

Why does The Fairphone (Gen. 6) not have an audio jack?

After some of the criticism that we received about removing the headphone jack from Fairphone 4, we did consider bringing it back for The Fairphone (Gen. 6). However, we realized it would be at the expense of increasing the phone’s dimensions. We also looked into the consumer data and Fairphone 4’s weight and thickness were more of an issue than the lack of a minijack, so we decided to keep the same approach, although it was a difficult decision. We didn’t want to invest in OLED technology for the display and then not have improved the phone’s dimensions and weight. But just like with Fairphone 4 and Fairphone 5, we will still offer an adapter, which has had overall positive user reviews.

Many headphones including our Fairbuds XL, can be connected directly to The Fairphone (Gen. 6) via a USB-C cable, in addition to Bluetooth.

What is the length, width and thickness of The Fairphone (Gen. 6)?

  • Length: 156.57 mm
  • Width: 73.28 mm
  • Thickness: 9.6 mm
  • Camera Bump: 1.428 mm
(Total thickness with camera bump: 11.028 mm)

Why does The Fairphone (Gen. 6) use USB-2?

In order to make the device more affordable, we explored how we could best balance our spec choices with the least possible impact on user experience. Going from USB-3 to USB-2 was one of them.

Does the Fairphone (Gen. 6) support a desktop mode?

The Fairphone (Gen. 6) currently does not support a dedicated desktop mode. Our focus remains on delivering an exceptional and sustainable mobile experience.
