What is the difference between The Fairphone (Gen. 6) and Fairphone 5?

With the launch of The Fairphone (Gen. 6), we want to provide our customers with the satisfaction of getting maximum value from our products. The Fairphone (Gen. 6) has:

  • A powerful Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset that’s future-proofed until 2033, with at least six Android upgrades from Android 15 onwards.
  • It also has a state-of-the-art camera system, with the main camera packing a 50MP Sony Lytia 700C sensor, allowing you to enjoy crystal-clear details and rich colors in any lighting.
  • With a Gorilla Glass 7i scratch-resistant display and an IP55 rating for dust and moisture, it is tough and durable, easily passing multiple military-grade drop tests (similar to the Fairphone 5).
  • The Fairphone (Gen. 6) has a compact 6.3” OLED screen, LTPO technology and a lighter build (8% less than the Fairphone 5).
  • With The Fairphone (Gen. 6), we’ve introduced Fairphone Moments, which allows you to physically switch between two distinct user experiences - the regular smartphone mode with full functionality, and a brand new minimalist Fairphone Moments experience for fewer distractions. This gives you the freedom to disconnect when you want and stay fully present in real life or customize your own experiences such as focus and travel modes.
  • The Fairphone (Gen. 6) has our lowest carbon footprint yet, made using renewable energy across key production stages - including the assembly, battery, display, camera, and chipset (in collaboration with Micron and Qualcomm).

What is the size and weight of The Fairphone (Gen. 6)?

  • Width: 73.28 mm
  • Height: 156.57 mm
  • Thickness: 9.6 mm (11.028 mm with camera bump)
  • Weight: 193 g

Will you consider releasing a smaller phone?

The Fairphone (Gen. 6)'s size is a decision driven by several factors to ensure longevity and global compatibility:

  • Spare Parts Availability: To support our 5-year extended warranty, we must select display sizes commonly available in the market.
  • Global Compatibility: The Fairphone (Gen. 6) needs to accommodate various antenna components for seamless operation across multiple countries and territories. A smaller device would not provide the necessary physical space on the internal boards for all required antennas.
  • Sourcing: Globally, smartphone screen sizes are trending larger. Sourcing mass-produced smaller screens at a competitive price for our users is increasingly challenging.

We will continue to monitor future developments to assess the viability of offering different screen sizes in the future.

What type of internal memory (RAM) is used with The Fairphone (Gen. 6)?

The Fairphone (Gen. 6) uses LPDDR5 (8GB) for its internal memory.

Are there different size and colour variants for The Fairphone (Gen. 6)?

The Fairphone (Gen. 6) is available in three different colours: Cloud White, Horizon Black, and Forest Green.

Does The Fairphone (Gen. 6) have biometric security options?

Yes. The Fairphone (Gen. 6) includes a fingerprint scanner and facial recognition for added biometric security. If you don't want to use it, you can use a screen lock with protection instead. See:

Good to know: Biometric data, like face and fingerprint data, is stored securely and never leaves your Fairphone.

Is my Fairphone (Gen. 6) too hot or too cold?

Normal operating temperatures for electronic devices range from 25-43°C. Slightly higher temperatures are also normal, especially during intense usage like gaming or system updates.

You can safely use your Fairphone when its internal temperature is between -10°C and +55°C. Note that below 0°C, the battery will discharge faster than usual.

Avoid charging your Fairphone if the ambient air temperature is above 40°C. If the internal phone temperature reaches 60°C, stop charging and immediately power off the device. Allow it a few minutes to cool down before powering on the device.

Good to know -

You can easily check your Fairphone's internal temperature by using the My Fairphone app:

  1. On your Fairphone, open the My Fairphone app.
  2. Using the tabs at the bottom, tap Phone.
  3. Tap Phone health.

Does The Fairphone (Gen. 6) support AM/FM Radio?

No. However, there are third-party apps you can use to stream radio.

Does The Fairphone (Gen. 6) have a barometer?

Yes, The Fairphone (Gen. 6) has a barometer.

What are the SAR values of The Fairphone (Gen. 6)?

  • Max SAR head: 0.487 W/Kg
  • Max SAR body: 1.388 W/Kg
  • Max SAR limb: 1.388 W/Kg

This is below the limit of 2.0 W/Kg as defined by the European Union.

Why does The Fairphone (Gen. 6) not have an audio jack?

After some of the criticism that we received about removing the headphone jack from Fairphone 4, we did consider bringing it back for The Fairphone (Gen. 6). However, we realized it would be at the expense of increasing the phone’s dimensions. We also looked into the consumer data and Fairphone 4’s weight and thickness were more of an issue than the lack of a minijack, so we decided to keep the same approach, although it was a difficult decision. We didn’t want to invest in OLED technology for the display and then not have improved the phone’s dimensions and weight. But just like with Fairphone 4 and Fairphone 5, we will still offer an adapter, which has had overall positive user reviews.

Many headphones including our Fairbuds XL, can be connected directly to The Fairphone (Gen. 6) via a USB-C cable, in addition to Bluetooth.

Why can't I use a voice command like "Hey Google" or Gemini to wake up or activate a voice command when my Fairphone (Gen. 6) screen is locked or off?

This is due to a hardware limitation of the microphone. The Fairphone (Gen. 6) uses an Analog Microphone (AMIC) instead of the low-power Digital Microphone (DMIC) required to keep voice capture active while the device is in a deep sleep state. This means you must manually wake the phone (e.g., press the power button) before you can fully use the voice assistant.

What is an OLED display on The Fairphone (Gen. 6) and why is it better?

The Fairphone (Gen. 6) has a 6.3’’ LTPO OLED display. The screen’s glass is Corning Gorilla Glass 7i 0.7mm and fully laminated. OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode, which is a type of screen technology used in smartphones. OLED offers a higher refresh rate and greater contrast. This results in colors appearing incredibly vibrant and dark areas being exceptionally dark.

OLED is also thinner, which means we were able to achieve a thinner device that is more future proof with the latest technology.

Why does The Fairphone (Gen. 6) use USB-2?

In order to make the device more affordable, we explored how we could best balance our spec choices with the least possible impact on user experience. Going from USB-3 to USB-2 was one of them.

Why did Fairphone launch The Fairphone (Gen. 6)?

Fairphone is trying to change the industry from the inside out. Our mission is to establish a viable market for sustainable consumer electronics. Part of this is recognizing the demands and changing the technology on the market.

Our new device, The Fairphone (Gen. 6), enables us to take the next steps in circularity, fairness, and longevity. It is a device that will be (technologically) relevant for years to come for customers who need a new phone. Also, as a company, we want to appeal to new customers to reach a wider audience while continuing our long-term support for other Fairphones.

When will you launch The Fairphone (Gen. 6) in the USA?

The Fairphone (Gen. 6) will be available in the USA via our partner Murena as of August 2025 with a de-Googled version only, and it is already available for pre-order. You can find more info here.

Does the Fairphone (Gen. 6) use Class 2 or Class 3 face unlock?

The Fairphone (Gen. 6) uses Class 2 (software-based) face unlock. This security level relies only on the standard front camera (2D imaging) to unlock the screen. The phone does not include the dedicated depth-sensing hardware required for the more secure Class 3 authentication. For high-security actions, the device relies on its side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Does The Fairphone (Gen. 6) have EMVCo certification for contactless payments?

The Fairphone (Gen. 6) does not have EMVCo certification. While this certification is not strictly required for contactless payments (and many payment apps work perfectly fine without it), you may encounter compatibility issues with certain apps that enforce their own strict security checks, such as those using Paylib in France. Because these restrictions are implemented within the individual app's software rather than being a system-wide block on the device, we highly recommend reaching out directly to the app developer for support or potential workarounds.

Battery and Charging

How long will it take to charge the battery of The Fairphone (Gen. 6)?

When using a Fairphone cable and charger, or compatible third-party alternatives, you can expect to reach:

  • 50% in about 22 minutes
  • 80% in around 37 minutes
  • 100% in about 85 minutes

To check if a third-party cable or charger is compatible, take a look at our support article: Charge your Fairphone.

Can I use a wireless charger on The Fairphone (Gen. 6)?

No, The Fairphone (Gen. 6) does not support wireless charging, similar to the Fairphone 5 and Fairphone 4.

When designing the Fairphone, we initially considered wireless charging. However, every design choice involves trade-offs, and we wanted to prioritize what matters most to our users, such as better battery life and a sleek design.

Can I purchase a Fairphone wall charger?

Yes, EU wall chargers are available for purchase directly from the Fairphone webshop.

Please note that UK wall chargers have been discontinued. If you are in the UK, you can safely use any high-quality, third-party USB Power Delivery charger that supports a minimum of 30W.

Software

What Android version does The Fairphone (Gen. 6) come with?

The Fairphone (Gen. 6) comes with Android 15 or above installed. Android 16 became available to The Fairphone (Gen. 6) on 16 March 2026. To learn all about Android 16, go to: Android 16: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).

Why didn't The Fairphone (Gen. 6) launch with Android 16?

Android 16 was released in June 2025. We would love to have launched The Fairphone (Gen. 6) with the latest Android version. However, it takes months of work from our team to develop software for a smartphone. We simply could not access the Android 16 code early enough to base our software on Android 16 at launch.

When are we getting Android 16 updates?

We’re working hard on the next generation of software support across our active devices. It’s a major priority for us to keep your experience advanced, secure, and up-to-date.

What’s next? We are excited to share that we are officially planning to release Android 16 for the Fairphone (Gen. 6) in April 2026. This update represents our commitment to longevity and providing you with the latest features as soon as they’re ready.

Keep an eye out—more detailed information and specific rollout schedules are coming very soon.

How long will The Fairphone (Gen. 6) receive software updates?

Fairphone plans to provide at least seven years of Android upgrades (up to Android 22) and an additional year of security updates, totalling eight years of software support.

Is the Fairphone (Gen. 6) compatible with Android Auto?

Yes, the Fairphone (Gen. 6) hardware supports Android Auto, and it is fully compatible when running the stock Fairphone Android OS.

Does Android Auto work on the Fairphone (Gen. 6) running /e/OS (Murena)?

Generally, no. /e/OS removes the proprietary Google services that Android Auto depends on. Attempting to get it to work requires installing several Google apps, which goes against the privacy-first design of /e/OS, and you can frequently encounter connection issues like "Communication error 22" because the required system files are missing.

Camera

How has the camera quality improved on The Fairphone (Gen. 6)?

The Fairphone (Gen. 6) boasts significant improvements in camera quality:

  • It features a recent Sony Lytia sensor for the main camera.
  • An enhanced ultra-wide camera sensor.
  • A high-quality Samsung sensor with autofocus for the front camera.

These, combined with a more powerful chipset and improved software tuning, lead to better overall image quality.

I see three lenses on the back but only two cameras. What is the third lens for?

The third lens is for sensors. There is a Time-of-flight (TOF) sensor underneath that lens.

Can I take photos on The Fairphone (Gen. 6) with full 50MP to disable pixel binning?

Yes. You can take photos using the full 50MP by using the "High pixel" mode in the Fairphone Camera app.

Can I record 4K@60FPS video on The Fairphone (Gen. 6)?

No, The Fairphone (Gen. 6) supports up to 4K@30FPS video recording. This is due to hardware limitations, similar to the FP5.

What is the minimum and maximum display brightness on The Fairphone (Gen. 6)?

The Fairphone (Gen. 6) display has a minimum brightness of 2 nits and a maximum brightness of 1400 nits.

What is DC dimming and PWM on The Fairphone (Gen. 6)?

DC (Direct Current) dimming and PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) are two different methods phones use to adjust screen brightness, especially for OLED displays.

  • DC dimming: Instead of flickering, DC Dimming controls brightness by directly adjusting the amount of electrical current supplied to the display. Less current means a dimmer screen.
  • PWM: This method rapidly turns the screen's pixels on and off at a very high frequency. The perceived brightness is controlled by varying the "on" time (the pulse width) - a shorter "on" time means a dimmer screen.

When used in combination, these methods can help mitigate flicker and eye strain.

Does the The Fairphone (Gen. 6) display support DC dimming or PWM?

Yes, The Fairphone (Gen. 6) display supports DC dimming and PWM, and it switches automatically depending on the brightness level. It uses Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) when the display is below 90 nits and switches to DC dimming when it’s above 90 nits. This happens automatically, so there’s no setting to control it.

Sound

Can I use an audio mini-jack (3.5mm) connector on The Fairphone (Gen. 6)?

The Fairphone (Gen. 6) does not have a mini-jack (3.5mm) port. This decision was made to maintain the compact dimensions and lighter weight of the device. You can connect audio accessories via a USB-C to Mini-jack Adapter, or by using a Bluetooth or USB-C headset.

For an explanation of why we didn't include a mini-jack (3.5mm) port, take a look at our public support article: Audio Jack 3,5mm.

The Fairphone (Gen. 6) comes with a 5-year warranty at no additional cost. This warranty applies regardless of where or how the phone was purchased, requiring only registration.

How does the 5-year warranty work with The Fairphone (Gen. 6)?

The majority of smartphones are covered by a 2-year warranty by default. With The Fairphone (Gen. 6), we go the extra mile to cover your new phone for up to 5 years at no additional cost and no matter where or how you purchased the phone originally.

All you need to do is register your Fairphone. This also applies if you received it as a gift. We kindly ask you to do this at your earliest convenience.
