How to ship a device containing a battery to Fairphone
Before you send your Fairphone in for a return or repair, you need to prepare it for safe transit. European safety regulations require specific packaging, battery, and labeling steps for all shipments containing lithium-ion batteries.
How to prepare and pack your device
Follow these steps in order to pack your phone securely:
- Back up your data and remove accessories: Make a backup of your personal data. Remove your SIM card, memory card, and protective case. Ensure the battery remains securely installed under the back cover.
- Discharge the battery to 30% or less: Unplug your phone and stream video or use apps until the battery indicator reads 30% or below.
- Power off the device completely: Press and hold the Power button, tap Power off, and confirm the screen is dark.
- Wrap and cushion the phone: Wrap the phone in bubble wrap or thick paper to prevent scratches and shield the power button. Place it in a sturdy corrugated cardboard box with enough packing material so that if you shake the box, you cannot hear anything rattle. Seal the parcel with heavy packing tape.
- Clear old labels and apply the UPS label: Peel off or cross out any old barcodes, addresses, or warning symbols on the box. Attach only the official prepaid UPS return label.
Please do not attach extra UN 3480 or UN 3481 battery hazard stickers. These are not required and could create delays or a returned parcel.
